In a corner of the greenhouse, a replica of the Victory of Samothrace mirrors the original owned by the Hannons. A photograph reveals that it was placed before the bay window, providing a commanding view from the Grand Salon. If this choice emphasised the sculpture’s appeal, it also created a harmonious dialogue with the butterfly motif on the stained-glass window above the greenhouse entrance. 🔎 Have you noticed all the plants in the old photograph? We are all ears for your thoughts on whether to bring back similar vegetation to the greenhouse. Image by David Plas #artinarchitecture #historichomes #MaisonHannon #artnouveau #visitbrussels

「 And Co 」 The essence of Art Nouveau emerged early in graphic arts, as seen in this cover design for the exhibition catalogue of Le Groupe des XX by Georges Lemmen. Formed in 1883, the XX group was an art collective that stood for uncompromising art and against academicism. 🌿 Exhibition Belgische Art(s) Nouveau(x) Belge(s) On view until 4 May 2025. _ Georges Lemmen (1865-1916), cover for the exhibition catalogue of the XX, 1892, print on paper, 17 × 19 cm, L’Atelier Symboliste Collection _ #ArtNouveau #GeorgesLemmen

From around 1900, Émile Gallé found inspiration in the umbellifer plant to design a range of salon, dining and bedroom furniture. Originally, Édouard Hannon and Marie Debard acquired three different chair models with umbel motifs: 1 📷 An umbel is portrayed in the frame. Two of these models are currently on display in the Grand Salon of the Maison Hannon. 2 📷 An umbel is portrayed in the backrest. This is Gallé's most widely reproduced chair design. This model is currently on view in the Petit Salon of the Maison Hannon. MAD Paris The last model is not on view at this time, but it is preserved and exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. 「 And Co 」 Lessons from Art Nouveau masters last beyond their time. This series of frames by Léon Sneyers presents a selection of photographs of artworks created by Philippe Wolfers. As a student of Paul Hankar, Sneyers picked up where his mentor left off in 1901, developing towards a more rigid style and hinting at the Art Deco movement to come. 🌿 Exhibition Belgische Art(s) Nouveau(x) Belge(s) On view until 4 May 2025. _ Léon Sneyers (1877- 1949), frames for photographs of artworks by Philippe Wolfers (1901), ca. 1902, oak, glass, King Baudouin Foundation, on deposit at the Art & History Museum _ #ArtNouveau #LéonSneyers

At the heart of the Maison Hannon, a fresco invites you to contemplate the symbolism of love and wisdom. Found on the right side of the staircase, this couple of shepherds represent the ancient knowledge gained through observing the natural world. The shepherds are a representation of Édouard Hannon and Marie Debard. This allegorical scene serves as a reminder of the ideal love that finds beauty and meaning in everyday moments. In many ways, the Maison Hannon is a portrait house. Each corner is an expression of Édouard and Marie’s love for each other, for art and nature. Remember how vibrant the Maison Hannon looks like in spring? Change is already in motion. The days are lengthening. The sun currently sets at 17:45. By March 1, it will set at 18:44, and by April 1 at 20:21. A nudge to shed winter’s hold. 📷 Dorian Lohse on inauguration day, 30 May 2023. Time flies. #MaisonHannon #heritage #artnouveau #brussels

Denise Hannon, the daughter of Édouard and Marie Hannon, was a frequent model for her father's photography. Édouard was a pioneer of Pictorialism in Belgium, and he co-founded the Association of Belgian Photographers. His work, known for its technical mastery and sociological approach, includes portraits, landscapes, and architectural studies. Pictorialism, flourishing from 1885 to 1915, sought to raise photography to the status of fine art, on par with painting and sculpture. Photographers like Édouard Hannon used the camera for artistic expression, focusing on beauty, tonality, and composition. They employed complex printing techniques to achieve a painterly quality, resulting in soft-focus images with rich, velvety textures. _ Portrait of Denise, Édouard Hannon, undated, Contretype, Collection of the Maison Hannon. _ #denisehannon #photography #edouardhannon #pictorialism #historicportraits
