🚨 Is your innovation process ready for the future? 🚨 The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is officially here, and it’s about to change the way we innovate, design, and manufacture products in the EU. 📅 When will this impact you? The ESPR entered into force on July 18, 2024, and the first product-specific rules are expected by mid-2025. Companies will likely have 18 months to adapt once the rules for their sector are announced. This means the time to prepare is now. 🔄 What does this mean for innovation? Products must meet new standards for durability, recyclability, and sustainability. > Materials need to be carefully sourced and designed for circularity. > Lifecycle assessments and digital product passports will become standard. > The end goal: no more planned obsolescence or hard-to-recycle designs. 💡 Adapt Your Innovation Process To stay ahead, innovation must focus on integrating these principles early in the design phase. The old ways of working won’t suffice—this regulation demands a fundamental shift in how products are created. ✅ Stay Updated Follow our company page for updates on the ESPR, industry insights, and tips on how to future-proof your business for a sustainable and compliant tomorrow. Let’s innovate smarter, together. 🌍 #Innovation #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Ecodesign #ESPR #FutureOfBusiness image credits: amazing images of Evgeni Tcherkasski

Have you ever considered that your customers might be "hiring" your product for a job you never intended—and how that could be the key to scalable, sustainable innovation? 💡 As Harvard’s Theodore Levitt wisely said: "People don't want a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole." Understanding your customers' true, core motivations is crucial for driving sales and fostering loyalty. At Material Mastery | Circular Transition Accelerators, we’re deeply fascinated by the ideals of the circular economy. However, we balance this passion with a pragmatic approach to business. For us, impactful ideas must be scalable. This is where marketing seamlessly intertwines with the economic principles of circularity. Designing a circular product is just the beginning—the real questions are: ❓ Is the user willing to pay? ❓ Is it convenient enough for them to choose? ⏰ Understanding Real-World Challenges In our fast-paced lives, would we always find the time to drive extra miles for buying a second-hand, refurbished piece of clothing, even if it’s more eco-friendly? Convenience often takes precedence over sustainability in our busy routines. 🍔 Learning from McDonald's Milkshake Case When McDonald's noticed a sharp decline in milkshake sales, their research revealed surprising insights. Customers weren’t just buying milkshakes for breakfast—they were hiring them for specific purposes, like: - Commute companion - Filling up - One-handed consumption - Lasting longer 🎯 The Real Innovation Challenge: - Understand the "Job": Identify what your customers are truly trying to achieve. - Design to "Hire": Create solutions they’ll naturally want to choose because they seamlessly fit their needs. - Integrate Sustainability: Make sustainability an intrinsic part of your solution, not just an add-on feature. 🔑 The Secret to Success: It’s not about pushing sustainable products—it’s about creating sustainable solutions that customers actively prefer because they work better. 💬 Let's Reflect Together: What unexpected jobs are your customers hiring your products for? #CircularEconomy #SustainableInnovation #EcoFriendly #CustomerFirst #BusinessSuccess #MaterialMastery

A couple of years ago we learned to know Yiannis Pontikes through Jean Paul Gueneau de Mussy as a passionate innovation-driven professor. His expertise includes the valorization of industrial residues such as bauxite residue (red mud), metallurgical slags, and vitrified municipal solid waste, focusing on their transformation into ceramics, cements, and inorganic polymers (geopolymers). Yiannis isn’t just a thinker—he’s a doer. We admire how his research drives the development of industrial processes that tackle the often-overlooked 'hidden rivers and mountains' of waste streams, turning challenges into sustainable opportunities. #keepupthegoodwork #materialscienceatitsbest #togetherwecanmakethechangehappen
Black Friday continues! We are now able to produce our "black glass", fully electrically, for a cement with "discounts" in CO2! It has been a long journey, where we developed our own rotary induction furnace (and...our own 20ft container, power supply, gas cleaning installation, granulation, cameras and sensors, the list is endless) but the result is most rewarding...as in the meantime, we have a team backing up this development, with know-how and commitment. The applause goes to Glenn Beersaerts (leading the work), Catalin Tunsoiu, Emmanouil Toumpektsis, Tobias Hertel, Pirmatech BVBA (Robbe and Johan in particular!) Dedicated to those who kept their faith in SREMat!

"Is your circular economy strategy stuck in the 'nice-to-have' box? 🚫 Let's flip the narrative. 💡 Imagine this: your competitors are already gaining market share, reducing costs, and boosting their ESG scores. You're still debating plastic bottle bans? 😬 It's time to think systemic, start small, and lead with ROI. Which of these 5 tips will you pitch at your next board meeting? Let's move circularity to the 'must-have' box—where it belongs. 📦💥 #circulareconomy #sustainability #businessgrowth"

# 1 reason companies fail to implement circular economy? It's in their "nice-to-have" box. 🙄 "Let's have a zero-waste office." 🙅♂️"Why don't we ban plastic bottles at our event?" This gets you nowhere. You want to be in the "must-have" box! Here's how to get a buy-in at the next board meeting: (based on 4 years of working with Prague's mayor) 1. Cut the deck from 40 slides to 2 -> most execs have a 30 sec attention span 2. Focus on systemic, large solutions -> but suggest a small pilot to validate the idea 3. Bring the social proof -> show how competitors are already ahead 4. Don’t just use the legal risks narrative -> focus on $, marketing, and the ROI 5. Ask for 300% of the budget -> you'll end up with 50% of what you need Which one of these resonate with you? 👉 Hit follow to learn more ♻ Repost to reach more people ♾ Get weekly success stories in my newsletter #circulareconomy #esg #sustainability

😤 As sustainability professionals, we're tired of the oversimplified 'plastic is bad' narrative. The case of "plastic vs paper" demands a more nuanced approach, backed by data and context. In order to compare these options, we've looked into LCSA (life cycle sustainability assessment; https://lnkd.in/ehEaetSf) methodology, which along the climate, also considers the impact to economy and society, for holistic reporting, and this is what we've found: 📊 Environmental Impact with Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (E-LCA): Paper packaging typically shows higher impacts in: - Water consumption (3-4x more than plastic) - Energy use during production - Land use - Eutrophication potential Plastic packaging typically shows higher impacts in: - Fossil fuel depletion - Marine pollution - End-of-life toxicity - Longer decomposition time 💰 Economic Reality with Life Cycle Costing (LCC): Paper packaging: - Higher production costs (€1.50-2.50/m²) - Lower waste management costs - Higher transportation costs due to weight Plastic packaging: - Lower production costs (€0.50-1.50/m²) - Higher waste management costs - Lower transportation costs 👥 Social Impact with Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA): #Paperpackaging advantages: * Better public perception * More local job creation in forestry/paper industry * Lower health risks from microplastics #Plasticpackaging advantages: * Better food preservation * Lower food waste * More accessible in developing regions 🎯 Key Learning: The best choice depends on: - Your specific application - Local recycling infrastructure - Transport distances - Regional energy mix -- by quantifying the above mentioned 3 factors LCSD = (w₁×E-LCA + w₂×LCC + w₃×S-LCA) / Σw Using a case study of sample packaging, we found that neither option scores definitively better when considering all factors (Paper: 58.3/100 vs. Plastic: 61.7/100). 💡 The real takeaway? Instead of asking "which is better," we should be asking "which is better for this specific context?" What's your experience with packaging decisions? Have you faced similar challenges in your sustainability journey? 🤝 We at Material Mastery | Circular Transition Accelerators can guide you through this complex journey of packaging optimization. 📩 Questions about sustainable packaging? 🎯 Why Material Mastery Says NO to Black Friday 🎯 As the shopping frenzy approaches, we at Material Mastery choose a different path, focusing on sustainability and mindful consumption. Here's why: 💡 1. Environmental Impact: Black Friday leads to a 25% increase in waste in the U.S. between Black Friday and New Year’s Day. In the UK, it generates 429,000 metric tonnes of greenhouse gases, equivalent to 435 return flights from London to New York. Business Waste 💡 2. Overconsumption: Approximately 80% of Black Friday purchases are discarded after a few uses, contributing to the throwaway culture. Business Waste 💡 3. Consumer Sentiment: A YouGov poll found that 42% of people believe Black Friday purchases are bad for the environment, and 50% acknowledge it contributes to landfill waste. At Material Mastery, we prioritize durability, ethical production, and environmental responsibility over fleeting discounts. Join us in making conscious choices that benefit both people and the planet. 🌍 What are your thoughts on Black Friday? Share below! 👇 #Sustainability #MindfulConsumption #EnvironmentalImpact

It's Friday, for us often a day of hope that what we are doing matters. Thanks for all supporting us on the journey of creating a better more sustainable future. Hopeful when we see the latest results of The Ocean Cleanup. They have reached the brave milestone of fishing 20.000 tons of plastic out of the ocean. #BRAVO #letskeepplasticoutoftheocean https://lnkd.in/exDe77bk
UPDATE: over 20 million kg of trash is now out of oceans and rivers #shorts
