Promoting nonviolence & protecting human rights since 1981.
About us
Peace Brigades International (PBI) is an international non-governmental organisation that has promoted non-violence and protected Human Rights Defenders since 1981. PBI works to protect Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), ordinary people and groups who face death threats, intimidation, detention and harassment because of their peaceful work in defense of Human Rights. We provide protection, support and recognition to local human rights defenders who work in areas of repression and conflict and have requested our support. We believe that lasting transformation of conflicts cannot come from outside, but must be based on the capacity and desires of local people. We avoid imposing, interfering or getting directly involved in the work of the people we accompany. Our work is effective because we take an integrated approach, combining a presence alongside human rights defenders on the ground with an extensive network of international support. PBI has 37 years of experience working alongside human rights defenders, opening and protecting space for peace, conflict transformation and the defence of human rights throughout the world. We are a life-saving international presence in areas of conflict and repression, and a powerful global advocacy network protecting those on the ground. PBI has previously worked in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Sri Lanka, North America, Haiti, Nepal and the Balkans and currently maintains projects in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico and Nepal. 🇭🇳 PBI in #Honduras accompanied ARCAH (The Honduran Alternative for Community and Environmental Vindication) to visit the #Jiniguare community, in the municipality of Ojojona. ⭕ ARCAH expressed their concerns about the direct impacts of the Jiniguare dam project on the community. Construction of the dam would mean the displacement of the people living in the area. ❇️ The community's open council has previously declared itself free of dam projects. This must be respected. 👉 Learn more about our work with ARCAH here: https://lnkd.in/dzuj-PXT

🇬🇹 February 25: National Day of Dignity for the Victims of the Internal Armed Conflict in #Guatemala ❌ Between 1962 and 1996 it has been documented that over 200,000 Guatemalans were killed and over 45,000 forcibly disappeared. ⚖️ The United Nations-backed Commission for Historical Clarification determined that the Guatemalan military was responsible for 93 per cent of the atrocities – including forced disappearances, massacres and torture – and that 83 per cent of the victims were Indigenous peoples. Each year PBI accompanies the survivors of the internal armed conflict including friends, families and the communities of those lost to speak out and march for justice and accountability. “We are stunned and disappointed by the UK Government's decision to slash aid in order to fund defence spending. Following in the wake of the USAID freeze, this decision will leave even more civil society organisations and human rights defenders exposed at a time of escalating global crises. Cutting UK aid means cutting support for the very initiatives that prevent conflicts, avert climate change, and help communities to live peacefully on their land, rather than have to flee. The decision to reduce spending to less than half of our legal obligations will also dent the UK's global reputation. PBI is one of many NGOs that has long called for the UK to adjust the way in which it supports global civil society, in order to ensure it is as effective as possible. A holistic approach is needed: one of effective funding, diplomatic support, and protection for human rights defenders at risk. This would represent a cost-effective approach to building a resilient, democratic world and - in turn - underpin the UK's own growth and security. We urge the Government to reconsider its decision and to develop a holistic approach with civil society at its core, so that UK aid and diplomacy can be as impactful as possible both now and in the future.” More 👉 https://lnkd.in/e6BrtvgM

🇰🇪 PBI Speaker Tour in Switzerland 🇨🇭 Our PBI Kenya team was active in the 4th Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process for Kenya engaging in key advocacy efforts to push for stronger human rights commitments. 🟢 They took part in a workshop on UPR Info, facilitated by the Mission of Slovenia, to deepen engagement with the review process. 🟢 They participated in the UPR pre-session, where they presented key recommendations addressing critical human rights concerns in Kenya. 🟢 They also followed up on ongoing cases and advocacy efforts to demand justice for victims with the UN Working Group on Enforced Disappearances. 👥 As the UPR process moves forward, PBI Kenya will continue engaging with permanent missions, urging them to adopt strong recommendations for Kenya ahead of the official session in May. 👉 To learn more about how PBI in Kenya is fighting for accountability and human rights read more here: https://lnkd.in/dkz2reDv

We had the privilege of participating in a community dialogue organized by Peace Brigades International (PBI). The discussion focused on the legal framework surrounding gender-based violence (GBV) and the importance of ensuring justice for survivors. GBV remains a critical issue that affects countless individuals, often leaving lasting physical, emotional, and psychological scars. Understanding legal protections is essential in the fight against this injustice. By raising awareness, strengthening legal support systems, and encouraging survivors to seek justice, we take a step toward breaking the cycle of violence. It is crucial that survivors know they are not alone. Access to justice not only holds perpetrators accountable but also empowers victims and helps build safer communities. We call on legal practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders to continue advocating for stronger enforcement of GBV laws, accessible legal aid, and survivor-centered support mechanisms. Let’s work together to create a society where no one suffers in silence. Justice, dignity, and safety are rights—not privileges. #EndGBV #JusticeForSurvivors #HumanRights #LegalFramework #CommunityDialogue #Theponainitiative
