#PUBLICATION | PensionsEurope position paper on the SFDR Level 1 Review : Response to the ESAs' Joint Opinion 📢 Today, on 14 November, PensionsEurope published its position paper on the SFDR Level 1 review, with a particular focus on the ESAs’ Joint Opinion on the SFDR. 🔍 We stress that the SFDR review should focus on refining the current framework to make it more fit for purpose. The existing structure presents major implementation challenges for pension funds and does not adequately account for their unique characteristics. To address this, we advocate for a dedicated sub-sectoral #RTS within the SFDR framework tailored specifically to IORPs. 🔑 #Simplification is key. Acknowledging the significant compliance costs already incurred by FMPs, including IORPs, we stress that introducing product categories could unintentionally increase regulatory burdens. Even those outside the categories might face additional complexity under a “non-category” status, resulting in more #reporting #requirements. ⚙️ Should the framework adopt a categorisation approach, we strongly support including a #transition category. Additionally, we advocate for the inclusion of #engagement and #exclusion strategies as core elements and for a simplified list of mandatory #PAIs. Read here 👇

🗣️Yesterday, Matti Leppälä spoke at the European Finance Forum about the relaunch of the Capital Markets Union, now rebranded as the Savings and Investments Union. 🤝Pension funds are seen as key players in tackling Europe’s big challenges—financing the #digital and #environmental transition, investing in #defence capacities and addressing the retirement challenges faced by many EU countries. 💡However, each problem should be tackled with a specific, tailored solution, rather than blending multiple objectives. 💡💡It’s important to remember that pension funds' fundamental #fiduciary #duty is to provide good pensions. They are part of the solution to Europe’s #challenges, but should never be forced to invest in specific areas or sectors.

As the host and speaker at the PensionsEurope Central and Eastern Europe Forum 2024, I had the privilege of engaging with experts and policymakers from all around Europe to address the future of pension systems in the region. More than 80 pension professionals, academics, and decision-makers from various European countries gathered in Vilnius to share their insights. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀? ➡️ 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀: It’s essential to recognize that your retirement income is your responsibility. Taking proactive steps today will secure your financial wellbeing in the future. ➡️ 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀: Beyond short-term motivation tools, it's important to focus on the long-term welfare of your employees. Contributing to their future pensions ensures their financial security when they retire and have finished working and creating value for your company. ➡️ 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀: Stability and supportive initiatives (matching contributions and others) are vital to fostering a strong pension system that benefits retirees and strengthens local economies. I am proud of the fruitful discussions we had, and I believe these conversations will help shape a sustainable future for pensions in our region.
