🫵 Renewable Hydrogen Coalition CEOs urge policy makers to stay the course and scale up renewable hydrogen! At the end of February, the new European Commission will publish its Clean Industrial Deal, setting out their plan to deliver Europe’s transition to climate neutrality and industrial #competitiveness. 🌍 Europe has rightly adopted an ambitious legislative framework for #renewablehydrogen for hard-to-electrify sectors. While Europe is leading on hydrogen project announcements, it is lagging on committed investments across the value chain. Bold actions are required over the next few months to boost uptake across the European Union as we enter this critical implementation phase for our sector. We need the following to ensure the competitiveness of the European renewable hydrogen industry: 🟢 Prioritise renewable hydrogen in all measures – focus will ensure impact and scale. 🟢 Fast implementation of adopted legislation and streamlined permitting for projects. 🟢 Close the cost gap with fossil incumbent alternatives by increasing public support, allowing cumulation of funding and leveraging de-risking tools. 🟢 Create GREEN lead markets for products made with renewable hydrogen to help deliver the adopted EU RFNBO targets. 🟢 Build a resilient value chain – turn Europe’s innovation edge in electrolyser technologies into industrial leadership, level the playing field on the EU single market. Policy makers now is the time for decisive action for the future of our industries, cleantech and jobs! More recommendations to come, watch this space. 📣 The European Commission has today published the Clean Industrial Deal – setting out its plan for a competitive and decarbonised European industry. The publication of the Clean Industrial Deal (CID) within the first 100 days of the new European Commission signals the EU’s commitment to accelerating #decarbonisation as a key driver of growth for European industries, providing more certainty and predictability for businesses and investors and strengthening the business case for renewable hydrogen by unlocking new demand opportunities and providing stronger de-risking tools. 🔑 Key measures in the CID include: ✅ Focus on electrification with complementarity of renewable hydrogen for hard-to-electrify sectors. ✅ Creation of lead markets through the uptake of renewable hydrogen. ✅ Launch of the third Hydrogen Bank auction with a budget of up to €1 billion in Q3 2025, facilitating the use of unspent EU funds to help close the persisting major cost gap. ✅ EU-made preference in public procurement and funding. ✅ Supportive State Aid Framework providing investment predictability and simpler access to public funding. ✅ A greater use of guarantees to unlock private capital. While certainty and focus has been ensured on the supply side, it is now crucial to ensure the same coherence on the demand side in the CID to create a market and help deliver the Renewable Fuels of Non-biological Origin (#RFNBO) targets. We look forward to working with the Commission to shape the details of this plan and to ensure that #renewablehydrogen plays its full role in Europe's clean industrial future. What’s in store for renewable hydrogen with the Clean Industrial Deal? – Recommended dos and don’ts for policy makers. This week, the European Commission will publish its Clean Industrial Deal. The Renewable Hydrogen Coalition has 5 key recommendations to policy makers to make it a success and unlock the transformative power of renewable hydrogen for industry in Europe. The #CleanIndustrialDeal MUST be a catalyst for Europe’s leadership in renewable hydrogen – not an obstacle. While certainty and focus has been ensured on the supply side, it is now crucial to ensure the SAME coherence on the demand side in the Clean Industrial Deal to create a market and help deliver the Renewable Fuels of Non-biological Origin (RFNBO) targets. What the Clean Industrial Deal SHOULD NOT do: 🚫 Consider renewable hydrogen and low-carbon hydrogen equal. 🚫 Use lead markets to introduce low-carbon hydrogen targets by the back door 🚫 Label products solely based on their carbon footprint. 🚫 Open the European Hydrogen Bank to other decarbonisation solutions 🚫 Create fossil fuel lock-in and displace investment in cleaner solutions What the Clean Industrial Deal MUST do instead: ✅Set a clear preference for renewable hydrogen and derived products. ✅Enable informed end-consumer choices via product labelling reflecting energy sources used for hydrogen production. ✅ Maintain the European Hydrogen Bank focused on renewable hydrogen and provide proper budget. ✅ Cut permitting times. Clear and decisive actions are needed to boost the uptake of RH2 across Europe as we enter this critical implementation phase for the sector! We have the technology and the ambition. Now, we need a Clean Industrial Deal that empowers industry to invest in renewable hydrogen. Policy makers let’s build a clean, competitive, and resilient industrial future here in Europe.
