The #ProtectedPlanet Report 2024 is the first report that fully assesses the global status of protected and conserved areas in the context of #Target3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Key findings from the report reveal:  👉 Progress has been made in increasing the coverage of protected and conserved areas but it must be accelerated considerably to fully meet Target 3 by 2030.  👉 One third of Key Biodiversity Areas fall outside protected and conserved areas and lack formal protection.  👉 More efforts are needed to ensure systems of protected and conserved areas are ecologically representative.  👉 Global system of protected and conserved areas need to be well-connected.  👉 Recognition of non-state governance of protected and conserved areas by Indigenous Peoples and local communities, remains limited.  👉 More data is needed to assess the quality of governance, management, and achievement of conservation outcomes and measure management effectiveness. Find all the key findings and recommendations from the Protected Planet report 2024 in the Executive Summary 📑 ⤵️ : Protected Planet | IUCN | UN Environment Programme #protectedareas #conservation #protectedplanetreport #marine #terrestrial #IndigenousPeoples #localcommunities #biodiversity #KMGBF #30x30

We applaud today’s announcement from President Biden to prohibit oil and gas drilling of 625 million acres of ocean. It’s “great news for ocean wildlife, our marine resources, and the people who depend on them,” says WCS’s John Calvelli.   Marine mammals, in particular, face multiple risks from offshore oil and gas exploration and extraction, including seismic surveys and other potential impacts.   This action achieves some of the desired outcomes of a National Marine Sanctuary for #HudsonCanyon but a designation is still needed to expand federal investment in long-term science monitoring, STEM education, and workforce development tied to this fragile and highly productive marine ecosystem.   Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/emB_dhxz

  • With the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, we can make 2025 a turning point for the protection of our planet.

🌊 Reflections from COP29 🌍 COP29, known as the “Finance COP,” was meant to usher in transformative climate funding for developing nations. Yet, for ocean advocates, it highlighted a significant gap: the ocean’s crucial role in climate action remains sidelined. In my latest update for RISE UP- A Blue Call to Action, I share key takeaways, including: 🔹 The urgent need for equitable climate finance that prioritizes grants over loans. 🔹 The potential of 2025 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to elevate ocean-focused commitments. 🔹 Priorities for COP30 in Belém to align ocean and climate frameworks and secure stronger financial commitments. 💡 The message is clear: the ocean can no longer wait. Now is the time for bold action. 📖 Read the full update here: https://lnkd.in/eUEExN7z #COP29 #OceanClimateAction #ClimateFinance #RiseUp4theOcean #BakuToBelem

🌊 Preferential Access Areas: A Vital Tool for Small-Scale Fisheries 🎣 New research published in Nature Magazine highlights the significant yet underutilized potential of Preferential Access Areas (PAAs) to support small-scale fisheries (SSF). This global assessment—the first of its kind—shows how PAAs can deliver critical benefits for coastal communities and the ocean they depend on. 📊 Key findings: - 63 PAAs across 44 countries, covering 3% of continental shelf areas worldwide - Inside PAAs, SSF showed: - Higher catch volume and economic value - Access to more nutritious fish species - Greater contributions to food security through self-consumption 🌐 The study emphasizes that small, well-managed ocean areas, co-governed with fishers and based on sustainable practices, could enhance nutrition security, livelihoods, and resilience for millions living in coastal areas. At RISE UP- A Blue Call to Action, we recognize the transformative role of preferential access policies in empowering SSF and achieving equitable ocean governance. This research highlights why inclusive approaches—like securing PAAs for small-scale fishers—are critical to advancing food security, human rights, and sustainable oceans. 📖 Read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/eMEGhVFD photo credit: Blue Ventures, Leah Glass

[#COP29] Read now: the Ocean & Climate Platform's new article on the outcomes of COP29, which concluded after two weeks of tumultuous debates in insufficient financial advancements to tackle the climate crisis ⬇️ The curtain fell on COP29 on Sunday 24 November, after two weeks of intense and challenging negotiations. Hosted by Azerbaijan, COP29 was marked by strong divides and tensions between developed and developing countries. Tasked to adopt a New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance to support developing countries in their climate efforts, delegates agreed on mobilising at least USD 300 billion annually from developed countries, and at least USD 1.3 trillion annually from all financial actors, by 2035. While this agreement marks a step forward, it is still far from sufficient to meet the needs of developing countries which are facing the ever-growing impacts of climate change. Moreover, questions remain on how the ocean, our best ally in the fight against climate change, will benefit from this increase in climate finance. Focused on political issues, there were limited opportunities to advance the ocean-climate nexus in the negotiations and secure ocean language in text decisions. Yet, the ocean community remained active to ensure it stayed visible. 🌊 This article was originally published here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eFfYCXER #OceanAction #OceanForClimate

  • 🌊 The Clock is Ticking: INC-5 and the Future of Plastic Pollution 🌍 As world leaders gear up for the fifth and final negotiation round for a global treaty to end plastic pollution (INC-5), from 25 November to 1 December 2024 in Busan, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Every year, millions of metric tonnes of plastic enter our ocean, devastating marine life, infiltrating the food we eat, and even the air we breathe. Coastal communities bear the brunt of this crisis, living with polluted shorelines, declining fish stocks, and health risks linked to plastic waste. Shockingly, since these negotiations began, nearly 20 million metric tonnes of plastic have polluted our ocean. INC-5 represents a critical opportunity to secure bold, binding global actions across the entire lifecycle of plastic. Decisions made in Busan must safeguard nature, protect human health, and put our planet on the path to recovery. The time for bold leadership is now—our ocean, our health, and our future depend on it. 🔗 Learn More: - WWF's paper outlining four essential outcomes for INC-5: https://lnkd.in/ePMJcBtF - IDDRI's blog post on the state of play for the Plastics Treaty: https://lnkd.in/dDMTh8F5 #PlasticTreaty #INC5 #EndPlasticPollution #OceanAction
