Think your "natural" juice is really natural? Think again. Many products with "natural" claims actually contain synthetic ingredients. SAFE is working to ensure that food labels are accurate and trustworthy, so consumers aren’t misled. 📢 Natural should mean natural. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dJdMr-em

A National Science Foundation (NSF) survey 📝 in the UK has found British consumers struggling to interpret #food #labels. Less than half of adults surveyed (49%) believe labels 🍫 provide sufficient information to make healthy food choices. Striking similarities with our study in continental Europe, where 89% of consumers surveyed, from a total sample of 5,000, believe that institutions should adopt regulations to make labels more transparent! 🔍 Article by FoodNavigator https://lnkd.in/eKrM8Qam

💶 A total of €2 trillion, or an annual bill of €100 billion over two decades, is the cost of cleaning PFAS or “forever chemicals” 🧪 from the environment, if they keep being produced and disposed of at the current rate. That is the economic cost of not banning PFAS in the EU, according to journalists and investigators working for the Forever Pollution Project. 👨🔬 SAFE strongly supports a ban of PFAS in the EU, to protect citizen’s health and the environment. According to As a member of the #R3PACK project, SAFE is actively working to ban #PFAS from food packaging, pushing for revisions of the 🧴 Food Contact Material Regulation and of the Packaging Waste Directive. https://lnkd.in/eUXFsCNn

At SAFE, we believe that inclusion starts with food, and we challenge the idea that being in economic need should mean giving up on socialising activities. 👨👩👦👦 🍽️ That's why we have created our #Healthy Meal project, to provide everyone with healthy, affordable meals. 🍊 Read more on our project and our network of restaurants throughout Europe! https://lnkd.in/gHaCFmq8 #Food4Inclusion

As 2024 comes to an end, we share some highlights of our work this year! 🎉 Two new EU projects started early this year: ROSETTA on food waste reduction 🍽️ and #Preventia, on non-communicable diseases 🏥, coordinated by SAFE. #GI SMART, a project on geographical indications and how they can contribute to sustainability and territorial development 🌍, started later this year. We wrapped up #Nutrimodule, a project that set up undergraduate nutrition programmes in Universities 🎓. We proudly hosted the General Assembly of the SISTERS’ project on food loss and food waste reduction in Brussels. SAFE called for an improvement of quality control rules for plastic food contact materials (FCMs) 🧴. SAFE and the R3PACK - Reduce, Reuse, Rethink PACKaging consortium voiced concerns on the health risks posed by Bisphenol A in food ⚠️. We called for legally binding targets to reduce food loss and waste by 50% in all EU Member States by 2030 📉. We have called for lower maximum values of acrylamide in food in EU law. Together with Chiara Manzi, from Associazione per la Sicurezza Nutrizionale in Cucina, we launched a successful awareness-raising campaign on this chemical 📢. On November 19, SAFE hosted its "2024 CONSUMERS COME FIRST Conference: Defining Sustainable Food Systems" 🌱, bringing together stakeholders and EU representatives. The full-day event discussed food, health, sustainability, and inclusion. Under the #Food4Inclusion programme, SAFE expanded its nutrition trainings for children 👧👦. The #HealthyMeal network grew to a total of 40 solidarity restaurants across seven countries, offering nutritious meals to those in need 🍲. SAFE commissioned an extensive survey on consumer attitudes across Europe regarding products that claim to be "natural" 🌿. Our report on their perceptions of food labels made it to the media 📰. As 2024 concludes, a huge thank you goes out to our remarkable members! This year has brought key #food and #health issues into focus. Clearer food labels, the risks of ultra-processed foods, the fight against food waste, and concerns about acrylamide have shaped the conversation across Europe, alongside the ongoing challenge of non-communicable diseases. At SAFE, we’ve worked hard to address these topics, advocating for stronger policies and raising awareness to keep consumer health and safety at the forefront. Now, we’re ready to take these efforts further, pushing for bold changes and stronger actions in #2025 to ensure a healthier, safer future for everyone.

One of the objectives of LIKE-A-PRO is to make alternative proteins more accessible and acceptable to consumers 🌱. This is partly done through the Living Labs 🧪 which are interaction points with consumers. In those living labs, the aim is to understand how people make food choices and what influences these decisions. These laboratories will also help develop new alternative protein products 🌿. 👉More information here: https://lnkd.in/esQ-RiK4 The photo has been taken at the Business Academy Aarhus during the living lab organised by the Danish project partner Food & Bio Cluster Denmark.
