⚡ How do you engage active neighbours in saving energy together with the rest of their neighbourhood? “When you live less than 50 meters from an ambassador, you are 4 times more likely to take energy saving measures.” Djoera Eerland shares the challenges and learnings of starting neighbourhood collectives at scale. We talk about strong shoulders, accessible tooling and the dynamics of neighbourhood teams. Buurkracht invests heavily in qualitative and academic research to understand their local communities and group behaviour. Djoera shares some of the strategies they’ve found most effective in mobilising neighbourhood teams to take action. In the end they not only help them to save energy, but also improve social cohesion in the neighbourhood. 🎆 Enjoy the holidays and this episode: https://lnkd.in/eR4C4nCt Thanks to Service Design Network, Leap Forward and Knight Moves - Service Design

“All of Latin America is on fire at the moment. We’re losing thousands of hectares of ecosystems…” This is how Coral brings us to Brazil at the start of our conversation. She is currently working for re.green, an organisation that restores tropical forests at scale, and she recently published her book on Ecosystemic Design. We talked with Coral Michelin, PhD before she took the stage at the Service Design Global Conference in Helsinki. Special thanks to our partners: Service Design Network, Leap Forward, Knight Moves - Service Design 🎧 Find the book of Coral Michelin and listen to our episode: https://lnkd.in/etAh4VNH Cheers, Laurens Somers & Jeroen Depuydt

In today's world, continuous learning and professional development are key to success in any field, especially product and service design. One of the most convenient and effective ways to learn and stay updated is by listening to specialized podcasts. Podcasts provide us with access to the experiences and insights of other designers and experts, keeping us informed about the latest trends and technologies. They also allow us to expand our knowledge and perspectives while going about our daily routines. In honor of World Podcast Day, I wanted to share a list of 10 podcasts that every product and service designer should be listening to. Each of these podcasts offers valuable resources, experiences, and innovative ideas that are always at your fingertips. I believe that "podcasts are windows into a world of ideas, experiences, and new knowledge, allowing us to stay updated on our professional growth and learning journey without being limited by time or place, while balancing our work and personal lives." 1. What's the smallest thing you could do to have an impact? Our colleague Yalenka Mariën - together with Tom Van Hoey - elaborates on the effective approach of setting up small experiments for accessibility and digital inclusion in our latest episode. Listen down below 👇

Inclusion & accessibility are a corner stone of good services. But how do you implement its principles and put theory into practice? In 2022, the City Deal 'E-inclusion by Design' kicked off here in Flanders, Belgium. The goal of this deal is to support the 13 central cities in making their services and organisations more inclusive. Currently, they're all collaborating to craft a toolbox that makes digital services as user-friendly and accessible as possible for their citizens. In our latest podcast, Jeroen and Laurens had the pleasure of chatting with Tom Van Hoey from District09, representing the city of Ghent, and our very own Yalenka Mariën from Knight Moves. Both are deeply involved in the City Deal and bring a wealth of experience in promoting E-inclusion by design and applying user-centred design principles. What do we take away from this conversation? - Small-scale iterative experiments > large test setups to cultivate a practical, user-centred mindset - A little push from professional coaches can do wonders in giving participants, colleagues, stakeholders, ... the confidence to move forward and start doing - Advocate for a culture of ‘safe nakedness’: let's try to get as "naked" as possible (with consent ofcourse 👀) in order so that everyone can share their work in-progress without fear of judgement and learn from each other Special thanks to Tom Van Hoey and Yalenka Mariën for this insightful conversation! When considering old, established industries such as maritime transport, we do not always think of Service Design as a powerful tool for major transformations. Yet, it is often the case that exactly there the most added value, impact and innovation can take place. A good example of this is Nemo: The Finnish Maritime Single Window developed by Siili Solutions for Fintraffic Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), and winner of the Service Design Awards 2023 - best commercial project. In this insightful conversation, lead designer Sanna Vainionpää, shares how Nemo came to be and how it - in the future - will enhance efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and optimise port operations. Together, we discuss the value and application of various service design techniques - such as customer journeys, prototyping and interviews - in the challenging context of improving the Finnish maritime transport industry where over 100 ships arrive in various ports on a daily basis, each submitting at least 20 mandatory notifications to over 20 stakeholders. In this open and honest conversation, Sanna shares a lot of evoking and personal memories of successfully completing this challenging assignment. Encouraging us - and possible you as well - to also work in the sector along the way. Thank you! Service Design Network Knight Moves - Service Design Leap Forward Jeroen Depuydt Laurens Somers

How can Service Design make a difference in the emergency room for major trauma? Both for the patients and for the staff? In this episode, we have a thoughtful conversation with Ashleen Nee and Linda K. going in-depth into their project “Save Time, Save Lives”, winner the 2023 Service Design Awards for Best Student Project executed together with YuYu Sun. We talk about their approach in getting to understand the ins and outs of the emergency room and its staff by spending 5 weeks on the ground, the process they went through in designing valuable solutions, presenting them to the board and pivoting along the way. We also discuss how major trauma care can benefit from the holistic service design approach, enhancing not only the efficiency of the services but also the effectiveness of care itself. Listen to Ashleen and Linda share their compelling and inspiring stories as their collaborative efforts with healthcare professionals led to significant improvements in patient care processes and outcomes, embodying the transformative power of service design in healthcare - all while still being students! Thank you for the lovely conversation! “The storyline of service design has been to first of all advocate the relevance for both public and private organisations … we are beyond that point now. We need to actively engage in the conversations that drive the world towards a better place, within different venues of course. Within the digital wellbeing arena, within the sustainable arena,…” — Peter Nørregård and Christina Melander We interviewed Christina Melander and Peter Nørregård about Courage to design for good while they were still busy organising a previous Service Design Global Conference. Leyla Acaroglu followed up with activating agency on her opening talk. 🎧 Listen to their insights on https://lnkd.in/ewYSqNmh 🇫🇮 And as we continue beyond this point, we look forward to Designing for Impact at the Service Design Global Conference 2024 in Helsinki.
