January 28th marks Data Protection Day! 🌐 This celebration honours the opening for signature in 1981 of Convention 108 - the first legally binding international instrument to protect privacy in the digital age. Since then, the challenges to protecting personal data have grown in number and complexity, and our understanding of data protection and privacy has evolved significantly. The Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) Data Protection Day provided valuable insights, including:   🌍The role of data protection within the evolving EU regulatory landscape and the broader technological and geopolitical climate. ⚖️ The importance of effectively enforcing recently adopted regulations, such as the Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act, Data Governance Act, Data Act, and Artificial Intelligence Act. At Spark, we are proud to contribute to the implementation and enforcement of these critical legislative acts, particularly through our current study on systemic risks under the Digital Services Act for DG CONNECT. Meet our sparkly trainees ✨ As Spark continues to grow, we would love to introduce you to the amazing talents joining us! 🇮🇹 Rebecca is Italian and holds a Master’s in Legal Studies from the University of Bologna. She is passionate about comparative research across EU Member States and to learn about diverse topics, especially Public Health, Employment, and Social Affairs. 🇧🇪 Théo, from Belgium, earned his Master’s in Globalisation and Law with a focus on Human Rights at the University of Maastricht. His favourite area of law is Human Rights, whether at the European or international level. 🇳🇱 Julie comes from the Netherlands and holds a Master’s in Conflict Resolution and Governance from the University of Amsterdam. Her passion lies in policy and legal research, with a particular focus on organised crime, democratisation, and peace-building. 🇧🇪 Héloïse, a Belgian graduate with a Master’s in Public and International Law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, is eager to contribute to meaningful EU policy and legal initiatives, from Energy and Environment to Justice and Home Affairs. 🇮🇹 Giacomo comes from Italy and holds a Master’s in European and Transnational Law from the University of Trento. He is enthusiastic about working with an international team on different tasks such as drafting a practical guide in the Environment area and reviewing national experts work in the Energy area.  🇮🇹 Sofia is from Italy and holds a Master’s in European and Transnational Law from the University of Trento. The Digital Services Act (DSA) is paving the way for safer and more transparent digital spaces! 👨💻 The DSA holds very large online platforms (VLOPs) and search engines (VLOSEs) accountable for tackling illegal content, safeguarding fundamental rights, and protecting election integrity.   We’re excited to share that Spark has been awarded a study for the European Commission (DG CONNECT) in collaboration with Open Evidence and PPMI | Part of the Verian Group. Here’s what we will focus on: 💡 Analysing systemic risks to fundamental rights. 🛡️ Providing a clear overview of effective risk mitigation measures. 📊 Creating a framework to evaluate how suitable and proportional these measures are. We’re proud to contribute to this important initiative. This project will play an important role in supporting the enforcement of the DSA and enhancing safety and accountability in digital spaces across the EU.
