An initiative of 33 European energy infrastructure companies, planning a dedicated hydrogen transport infrastructure

About us

Since its inception in 2020, the EHB initiative has contributed to the development of a European hydrogen market through publications of its flagship EHB maps, depicting a vision of a pan-European hydrogen transport infrastructure. These network maps and corresponding studies demonstrate how this vision is both technically feasible and economically affordable. The initiative’s contributions have been well-received by hydrogen market players and policy makers alike, with the EHB’s technical inputs being referenced several times in the European Commission’s Hydrogen and gas decarbonisation package, published in December 2021

  • 📢 The European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) is now part of GIE! Together, they have released their new paper on “𝐸𝑢𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝐻𝑦𝑑𝑟𝑜𝑔𝑒𝑛 𝐵𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑏𝑜𝑛𝑒: 𝐵𝑜𝑜𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐸𝑈 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠”. Read it on our website ➡️https://lnkd.in/gYiupe_u Our latest publication highlights how 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, including strategic 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 and 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀, is central to unlocking a cost-effective, secure, and scalable energy transition for Europe. With renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, we can provide 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 solutions for a cleaner future. This effort is all about achieving 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 and 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 decarbonisation. Although with robust hydrogen infrastructures, storages and terminals, we are able to ensure energy security, public support is still central to de-risk investments and accelerate progress in the European Hydrogen Backbone. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗵𝗶 & 𝗟𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 underscoring the importance of hydrogen infrastructure in producing H2 where it is most economical. To meet our 2040 targets, we need to start laying the groundwork now, as hydrogen infrastructure projects can take up to seven years to complete. The call is clear: A united EU strategy on hydrogen infrastructure is necessary to optimise future planning and investments, securing Europe’s energy independence and competitiveness. #ehb #hydrogen #hydrogeninfrastructure #EU #EC #EnergySecurity #Decarbonisation #Sustainability #HydrogenNow

📢 EHB Launches a new report: “Implementation Roadmap - Public support as catalyst for hydrogen infrastructure”. 🎤 Following today's webinar, we're pleased to announce the publishing of a new report, providing recommendations on most cost-effective way to spur the build-out of hydrogen value chains. 📃 The EHB recommends two forms of public support: developmental support and construction/operating support. An estimated €27.5B of public support enables 14MT (490 TWh) of hydrogen to be delivered by ~31.000 km of hydrogen pipelines by 2030, reducing annual emissions by up to 312 MT CO2e per year by 2050. • Fruitful discussions at this week Clean Transition Dialogue emphasized the role of energy infrastructure in the green transition. Executive Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič led the dialogue, focusing on the development of smart and interconnected systems. Maria Sicilia, EHB Chairwoman, represented the 33 gas infrastructure operators that are part of the EHB, highlighting EHB contribution to the dialogue: “A very important initiative for an efficient implementation of the EU Green Deal. At this stage, it is critical to coordinate all energy sectors to create an orchestrated path towards a net zero future, with hydrogen at the crossroads of electricity, gas and CO2 markets, enabling a well-functioning energy system and the sustainability of a competitive industry in Europe“     These dialogues, initiated by President Ursula von der Leyen, foster collaboration between the Commission and industry to support the European Green Deal.   #CleanTransition #EuropeanGreenDeal #EuropeanHydrogenBackbone

Securing Europe's industrial competitiveness is an important overarching priority. Today, President Ursula von der Leyen and I sat down with more than 20 representatives of key clean tech sectors, as part of a series of clean transition dialogues, to boost the industrial dimension of the #EUGreenDeal. Innovative clean technologies are the backbone of the green transition, and they will play an increasing role in the EU's economy. We therefore focused our minds on very practical issues, such as the necessary regulatory framework to enhance domestic manufacturing capacity, speedy access to financing to leverage private investment, and ways to secure skilled workforce. We also have to raise our game in the area of critical #rawmaterials, and I will meet the representatives of the entire value chain on February 23. I want to hear what they have to say on ways to boost our domestic production of primary critical raw materials as well as the production of recycled and high-quality secondary raw materials, while also building fair, reliable partnerships with third countries. On February 26, I will sit down with more industrial representatives to discuss actions needed to develop the interconnected, scaled-up, smart infrastructure that is a pre-requisite to the electrification and decarbonisation of our economy. I am particularly glad that the European Investment Bank (EIB) and social partners are part of these engagements because we need all hands on deck. We have no time to spare, as this will also determine our overall standing on the global stage.
