Human Rights Day: FIHRRST Launches 2023 Sustainability Report Study On December 10, 2024, FIHRRST, in collaboration with Moores Rowland Indonesia (MRI), the Embassy of Belgium, and KOMNAS HAM RI, unveiled its fifth annual study analyzing the 2023 Sustainability Reports of IDX-listed companies. Held at Hotel Ashley Wahid Hasyim, Jakarta, the event emphasized the pivotal role of human rights in business practices. The opening featured insights from Mr. Marzuki Darusman, FIHRRST founder, who stressed integrating human rights into corporate strategies. Keynote speakers included H.E. Frank Felix, Belgium’s Ambassador to Indonesia, and Ms. Risa Rustam, IDX Director of Finance and HR, who highlighted sustainability reporting as a cornerstone of Indonesia’s capital market development. This year’s study aligns with the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and underscores the connection between human rights and sustainability. Panels explored critical topics, such as: 1. Human Rights in Sustainability Reporting: Discussed about HRDD from Mr.Tauvik MUHAMAD from International Labour Organization and Ms. Tatat from Oxfam in Indonesia, and how it has been implemented in Indonesia through the lens of Ms.Harniati from Directorate General of Law and Human Rights. 2. EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD): Strategies for Indonesian companies to align with global standards and enhance practices by Mr. Antoine Ripoll the Delegation of the European Union to ASEAN and Mr Richard Gardiner fromStrategic Public Policy Lead, World Benchmarking Alliance 3. ESG & Environmental Standards: Panels addressed evolving regulations like the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the need for transparency in environmental impacts by Mr. Andi from Satya Bumi and Mr. Imam A. El Marzuq from Rainforest Alliance 4. Best Practices in Sustainability Reporting: Showcasing corporate excellence in integrating human rights into operations. This session, led by Mr.Dendi Trisnadi, featured notable panelists including Mr. Mahmud Samuri, Ms. Luluk Andriyani from APP Group, Mr. Inra Gunawan from APRIL, Mr. Hermansyah Y Nasroen from PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional, and Mr. Alexander Lieman from Harita Nickel The event concluded with an awards ceremony honoring companies for outstanding sustainability reports, with 19 receiving A+ scores. FIHRRST Operations Director, Mr. Ali Rahmadi, expressed optimism about Indonesia's progress in advancing human rights and corporate transparency. Mr. Unang Mulkhan (right), the Senior Business and Human Rights Specialist at Moores Rowland Indonesia’s Foundation For International Human Rights Reporting Standards (FIHRRST) was recently inaugurated as an Adjunct Professor at Chosun University in Gwangju, South Korea, by its President, Professor Kim Chun-Sung (left). Gwangju is a 'City of Light' for human rights, and is the setting of Nobel Laureate Han Kang's powerful reflections on resilience and justice. "It’s an honor to be inaugurated as an Adjunct Professor at Chosun University by its esteemed President, Professor Kim Chun-Sung” said Unang. “Inspired by Gwangju’s legacy and the powerful contributions of Nobel Laureate Han Kang, I look forward to contributing to this vibrant community committed to human rights." [UNRBHR 2024] As part of the 2024 United Nations Forum on Responsible Business and Human Rights (UNRBHR 2024), the Foundation for International Human Rights Reporting Standards (FIHRRST) hosted a session titled : "Promoting Responsible Business Practices through Effective Remediation" on September 27, 2024. This event highlighted the creation of a platform for innovation and collaboration, encouraging companies to engage in dialogue with communities, governments, and civil society organizations. The event was also attended by Commissionner of Komnas HAM (National Commission on Human Rights) Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Prabianto Mukti Wibowo and Ms. Anis Hidayah. Additionally, NGOs such as Issara Institute and EarthRights International were also present. It particularly focused on the extractive industries, exploring the innovative strategies these sectors can adopt to address past damages while enhancing their reputation and stakeholder trust. The session also showcased businesses’ progress in handling grievances, and the lessons learned from remediation. The event convened key stakeholders from the private sector alongside business and human rights experts. Notable speakers included Ms. Sera Noviany, Senior Sustainability Expert at Asia Pulp and Paper Group Asia Pulp & Paper Indonesia(APP Group); Mr. Mahmud Samuri, Vice President of Human Resources and General Affairs at PT. BUMI Resources, Tbk. Tbk; Mr. Inra Gunawan, Compliance and Human Rights Manager at PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (APRIL Group); Mr. Arun Kumar, Regional Specialist at the International Labour Organization (ILO); and Ms. Rapatsa Trirath from OXFAM in Asia. Oxfam in Asia The session underscored the critical role of effective remediation in promoting responsible business practices, demonstrating that not only do companies address past human rights impacts, but also build stronger relationships with stakeholders and create sustainable value by embedding these practices into their core operations. FIHRRST hopes that this event will raise awareness among other companies about the importance of adopting practices to improve access to more effective remediation mechanisms, in response to the environmental challenges and human rights violations often faced in the industry sector.
