Today is a dark day for progress in the world. While we are gutted by the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, now we need to stay strong and make sure we have each other's back. Because only together we can fight back against the hate directed at women, people of colour, our LGTBQI community, for those struggling for freedom. You are not alone. Even in these times of darkness, we must keep hope burning bright, as a beacon of resistance and of freedom. Only by uniting can we keep this flame alive and continue to fight for our planet, for democracy, for peace and for prosperity for all.

Workers unite!✊️ Yesterday, 1,000 essential workers from nine countries across Europe – cleaners, security guards and catering workers – stood up together in Brussels to protest the race to the bottom on working conditions in their sectors. They demanded the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to improve pay and conditions for millions of workers through procurement reform. The EU’s current procurement rules prioritise the lowest price at the expense of workers’ well-being. Stop the race to the bottom, stop exploitation! #WorkersRights

We are proud to nominate Azerbaijani academic, anti-corruption fighter & fossil fuel industry critic Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu for this year's Sakharov prize. He was arrested in 2023 after publishing an article that criticised the country’s oil and gas policies and created a charity to return public resources stolen by Azeri oligarchs to the people of Azerbaijan. Nominating Dr Ibadoghlu while Azerbaijan prepares to host COP29 in November would cast a global spotlight on Baku’s inhumane treatment of critics of the fossil fuel industry and put pressure on the EU Commission to reconsider the EU’s energy trade relations with Azerbaijan. #SakharovPrize #COP29

Gender equality starts at the top! The new EU Commission must reflect the people they serve. In 2019 we had an even number of men and women in the top jobs of the European Commission. But this time around, EU governments have only proposed 9 women out of 26 Commissioner spots. Are we moving back in time? We will keep pushing for gender balance in the EU Commission. #GenderEquality #EuropeanUnion
