  • UK Researchers - follow us on a journey to de-mystify Horizon Europe funding! 🧙♂️ 🌋 ⬇ ⭐ The Horizon Europe Programme provides #research funding opportunities for every UK applicant: ◼ from early career to senior researchers; ◼ from academic and non-academic institutions (SMEs, charities, hospitals, NGOs, government departments...); ◼ and from all disciplines. However, we are aware that, especially for applicants new to European funding, applications to Horizon Europe might be daunting at first. Hence, we will post articles on all aspects of Horizon Europe funding, from successfully applying to demystifying the different pillars, over the coming months. Today's post will provide a general overview of Horizon Europe and its "Three Pillars", so strap in! 👩🚀 🚀 ➡ What is Horizon Europe? Horizon Europe is the EU's main funding Programme for Research and Innovation activities in all research areas. It fosters excellence in research and promotes the formation of international partnerships. With a current total budget of €95.5 billion, it will run from 2021 to 2027. ➡What is the UK's relationship to this R&I programme? As the UK is associated to this Programme, UK-based researchers can apply to all calls, provided the call text doesn't state otherwise. ➡ What is the structure of Horizon Europe? This funding programme is based on a "three pillar structure", supplemented by horizontal pillars and other actions. Each pillar is a funding scheme with a specific focus and regulations. ➡ The "Main Three Pillar Structure"? ◼ Pillar 1️⃣ promotes excellent science in all research areas. Applicants can submit a proposal of their choice. There are three funding schemes with different focuses: "MSCA" (training of researchers), "ERC" (frontier research), and "Research Infrastructures" (to set up infrastructure). ◼ Pillar 2️⃣ funds research activities where the outcomes directly support EU policy priorities. All research areas are funded; however, submitted proposals must convince evaluators that the consortium composition and the chosen research methodology will successfully deliver all the objectives outlined in the call text. ◼ Pillar 3️⃣ funds high-risk innovative projects in disruptive technologies at all technology readiness levels in both open- and priority-driven calls. ➡ We will discuss the specifics of each scheme and more funding opportunities in subsequent posts. Stay tuned! 😉 ➡ SPOILER: Our next post will provide UK applicants with information on applying for Horizon Europe funding and the available support for all disciplines and sectors. ⭐ UK researchers, please share these posts within your research communities, both in the academic and non-academic sectors, and with those looking for new funding opportunities.⭐ UK Research and Innovation #grant #funding #HorizonEurope #opportunity #earlycareer #history #biology #chemistry #physics #geology #STEM #Arts #Humanities #sociology #literature #mathematics #statistics #languages

  • Ready to take your research from the lab 🧪 to the market 📈, but you need funding? Check out our handy summary of the EIC funding scheme under Pillar III of Horizon Europe! ⬇️ ✨ Background ◼️ The European Innovation Council (EIC) funding scheme is separated into 4️⃣ different funding streams according to the proposal research's 'Technological Readiness Level' (TRL). ◼️ There are 'open' calls and calls with specified topics ('challenges'). ◼️ EUR 1.4 billion of funding in total will be available for 2025. ✨ The 3️⃣ EIC funding schemes relevant for UK entities: ➡️ The EIC Pathfinder scheme funds multi-disciplinary research teams with up to €4 million to research visionary technology with breakthrough potential in the earliest stages of their scientific or technological development (TRL 1-4). Building on new, cutting-edge directions in science and technology, the aim is to disrupt the field and market or create new opportunities. ➡️ The EIC Transition funds the maturation and validation of novel technologies (TRL 3-6) resulting from EU-funded projects with promising commercial potential. Follow-up funding for the following EU-funding schemes: ◼️ EIC Pathfinder projects; ◼️ ERC Proof of Concept projects; ◼️ Horizon collaborative projects from Pillar 2/ societal challenges. ➡️ The EIC Accelerator funds start-ups and SMEs to develop and scale up innovations within TRL 6-8, which have been identified to have the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones. These start-ups and SMEs are looking for substantial funding, but the risks involved are too high for private investors alone to invest. 🛑 As set out in the UK's Trade and Cooperation Agreement which sets out the details of the UK’s association to Horizon Europe, UK entities shall not participate in the EIC Fund established under Horizon Europe. (TCA https://lnkd.in/d4rd5kxV, Protocol 1, Article 6) This means: ❌UK entities can only participate in the 'Grant-only' scheme in the EIC Accelerator. ❌ UK entities are not eligible to participate in the EIC STEP scheme. 👉 Please find this confirmed at 5:32:00 of the EIC Info day recording: https://lnkd.in/dvQ53bzm at ✨ How to get started: 1️⃣ Read the 2025 EIC calls outlined in the Work Programme and decide whether your proposed project fits an EIC scheme. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ekERzeFW 2️⃣ 'Straight from the horse's mouth': Check out the EIC info day for a great overview and a better understanding of the schemes 👉 https://lnkd.in/ekERzeFW 3️⃣ Find partners and build your consortium per the call criteria - check out our previous and upcoming posts for tips and further guidance. 🤘 4️⃣ If questions remain, contact the UK EIC NCP 👉 https://lnkd.in/ekvu7K2a 🟧 Spoiler: The next post in our series will focus on the 'Widening Scheme' and its relevance for UK researchers.
