About us

Non-profit organisation working for child rights. UNICEF is the driving force that helps build a world where the rights of every child are realized. We have the global authority to influence decision-makers, and the variety of partners at grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. That makes us unique among world organizations, and unique among those working with the young. We believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind – to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. We believe that we can, together, advance the cause of humanity.

  • 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐬: 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞 🪪 Over 500 million – or close to 8 in 10 - children under 5 have had their births registered in the last 5 years, reflecting notable strides in securing legal identity worldwide, according to a new UNICEF report released today. Today, on UNICEF's 78th anniversary, we celebrate this significant progress in safeguarding children’s rights. This global progress has largely been driven by countries prioritizing timely registration, leveraging health, social protection, and education systems, expanding services to more locations, digitalizing the process, and eliminating fees. Nevertheless, 2 out of 10 children 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬. This essential document serves as proof of registration and is critical for acquiring nationality, preventing statelessness, and ensuring children can access their rights from birth. Without birth certificates, these children are often excluded from education, healthcare, and vaccinations, making them more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Together, we must strive to close this gap and ensure that every child is seen, protected, and given the opportunity to thrive. Legal identity is not just a right—it is a foundation for a better future. Let’s continue working towards a world where no child is left invisible. 💙 #ForEveryChild #PourChaqueEnfant #VoorIederKind #UNICEF #UNICEF78

Statement by UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell on the impact of the situation in Syria on children: “With the situation in Syria rapidly evolving, UNICEF reiterates the UN Secretary-General’s appeal for calm, to refrain from violence, and to protect the rights of all Syrians – especially children, at least 80 of whom have been killed in the past two weeks. UNICEF remains steadfast in its commitment to remain on the ground, working alongside our partners to deliver life-saving assistance to children and their families. Humanitarian conditions inside the country are dire, with millions of children and families facing extreme deprivation. More than a decade of war has caused massive damage to critical infrastructure, widescale displacement, and severely limited access to essential services – including safe water, sanitation, protection, education, health, and nutrition. UNICEF calls on all parties to ensure that humanitarian actors have safe, unimpeded access to reach children and families with assistance. This is critical to our ability to rapidly scale up our response to meet the growing humanitarian needs. UNICEF also calls on all parties to commit to a sustained peace, so that Syria’s children can survive and thrive. The children in Syria have suffered enough. They deserve a future of peace, dignity, and opportunity.”

By annual tradition UNICEF launches its global appeal: 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 (HAC). By 2025, nearly 10 billion dollars will be needed to provide urgent assistance to 109 million children in 146 countries. These funds will need to tackle the growing challenges that threaten children, from conflicts and the impact of climate change to displacement and health issues. Children are increasingly affected by sudden natural disasters and other unpredictable emergencies, which endanger their health, cause food and water insecurity, and hinder access to education. This highlights the growing need for more flexible and predictable funding. It will enable us to provide faster, large-scale assistance based on needs and better prepare for future risks. UNICEF will always stay committed. And so do we. Together with our partners, we can ensure protection and life-saving support for children, with a focus on reaching the most vulnerable. Together, we can make it happen #ForEveryChild 💙 #HAC #HumanitarianActionForChildren #UNICEF #PourChaqueEnfant #VoorIederKind
