Our biggest challenges cannot be solved alone. Here at UNU-CRIS, we produce interdisciplinary research on policy challenges that require cross-border and multi-level governance and cooperation. What drives us is how we can better work together across borders and disciplines to produce solutions in policy areas such as migration, digital, climate, health, economics, and trade, as well as the study of how supranational, national, and subnational governments and organisations can improve. About us
The Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies is a United Nations research centre. We produce interdisciplinary research on policy challenges that require cross-border and multi-level governance and cooperation, and offer training programmes based on that expertise. UNU-CRIS is based in Bruges (Belgium) at the premises of the Grootseminarie, thanks to the generous support of the Province of West-Flanders. It receives its core funding from the Flemish Government and collaborates with the College of Europe (Bruges) as a result of a Memorandum of Understanding, instituting their institutional collaboration. 🌍 School of Modern Diplomacy Closing Session: Science Diplomacy in the Age of War As the School of Modern Diplomacy concludes its impactful program, Session 10, Science Diplomacy in the Age of War, underscored the pivotal role of science in shaping international relations and addressing global challenges. Key Insights: - Eric Piaget (Visiting Research Fellow at United Nations University) explored the evolving facets of science diplomacy, from informing foreign policy with data (e.g., climate negotiations, the Iran nuclear deal) to fostering international collaboration through major scientific initiatives like CERN and SESAME. His analysis highlighted the synergy between science, diplomacy, and policymaking, distinguishing between the strategic and the pragmatic approach. - Luk Van Langenhove (Academic Commissioner for International Institutes and Networking, Vrije Universiteit Brussel Professorial Fellow, UNU-CRIS) emphasized the moral responsibility of universities in advancing science diplomacy. He outlined how science can address pressing global issues such as climate change, nuclear proliferation, and AI, while navigating challenges like research security and scientific protectionism in today’s geopolitically unstable environment. 💡 Core Session Takeaways: In an era of scientific protectionism, science diplomacy operates at the intersection of knowledge and diplomacy, enabling: - Science in diplomacy – Informing policy with scientific expertise. - Science for diplomacy – Leveraging scientific collaboration to enhance international relations. - Diplomacy for science – Using diplomatic frameworks to support large-scale scientific initiatives. In the words of Luk, “Science can be the builder of bridges” in policymaking because it allows experts to speak the same language and foster collaboration amidst global challenges, translating empirical data into informed policy choices, and bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and policy implementation. 📢 Looking Ahead: The School of Modern Diplomacy’s discussions have paved the way for new approaches, emphasizing the need for universities and scientific communities to embrace their role as diplomatic actors. It has introduced new types of actors, such as universities as diplomatic players, and we hope this continues further from this point on. Let’s commit to leveraging science as a tool for peace, progress, and global governance. 🌐 Programme organized by United Nations University - CRIS, Diplomatische Akademie Wien, Ghana’s Foreign Services Institute, in collaboration with Ghent University & Brussels School of Governance (BSoG).
