As we honor the legacy of President Carter, we reflect on his steadfast commitment to maintaining a strong transatlantic partnership. In January 1978, President Jimmy Carter became the first American president to visit the headquarters of the European Community in Brussels. He marked this historic visit by emphasizing, “As the first American president to visit the headquarters of the European Community, I believe this meeting symbolizes America’s abiding commitment to a strong and united Europe, and to the European Community.” This visit reinforced the U.S.-EU relationship and a shared vision of unity and partnership. #OnThisDay #USEUHistory

About us
The U.S. Mission to the European Union (USEU) is the direct link between the U.S. Government and the European Union (EU) in Brussels, Belgium. The United States has maintained diplomatic relations with the European Union and its forerunners since 1953. Over the years USEU has grown as U.S. relations with the EU have become deeper and more complex. In 2000 the Mission moved into its present building at 13 rue Zinner, near the historic center of Brussels. Today the Mission is home to some 100 employees representing the Department of State, as well as the Departments of Commerce, Agriculture, Homeland Security, Justice and Treasury; the Agency for International Development and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

This morning, Ambassador Gitenstein joined Jamil Anderlini, Editor-in-Chief of POLITICO Europe, for a thought-provoking discussion on the critical role of media freedom in sustaining democracy. Ambassador Gitenstein reflected on the urgent need to address the challenges facing independent journalism. He underscored that media freedom is not just a regional issue but a global one, and its survival is essential to the health of democracy everywhere: “If media dies in Europe, democracy dies in Europe—and it will die in the United States too.” The discussion also explored practical solutions, including innovative ways to fund independent media. Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning. #IndependentMedia #FreePress #Journalism #Democracy #TransatlanticRelationship

A strong, independent media is essential for democracy. As Ambassador Mark Gitenstein and former European Commission VP Věra Jourová highlight, “Democracy cannot function without a free press.” Over the past two years, 🇺🇸 and 🇪🇺 have worked together to address threats to media freedom, from disinformation to attacks on journalists. The adoption of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) in March 2024 and other initiatives are key steps in safeguarding media pluralism and protecting press independence. However, challenges remain. The rise of digital platforms and AI calls for innovative solutions to support independent journalism and ensure its sustainability.
