Healthy animals, healthy people, healthy planet
About us
In Africa, millions of people depend on their livestock. Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgium is developing animal health care there along with the local population and supporting agro-ecological livestock keeping. Together, we use training, equipment and medicines to keep their livestock and the surrounding environment healthy, so that the people can live their lives in dignity. Our special attention to the health of ecosystems also reduces the risk of diseases crossing from wild animals to humans and livestock. In this way, we help to prevent pandemics such as Covid-19 and Ebola. Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgium helps livestock keepers in nine African countries to build a better future. That future begins with healthy animals. But we do more than just vaccinating and taking care of herds. We help the population to improve their livestock farming and everything that is connected to it. From microcredits, sales, water and pasture management to training, agricultural equipment, emergency aid, peace negotiations and advocacy. Our vision: healthy animals, healthy people, healthy planet. Our mission: to optimise livestock farming in order to improve the well-being of disadvantaged populations in the South. We are active in Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Benin, DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda. We are a member of VSF International.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a full house for the premiere of the docuseries ICYIZERE (hope). 🎥 The audience was deeply moved by the inspiring stories of 12 courageous Rwandans who, with the support of six local NGOs, are building a hopeful future. Following the screening, VRT journalist Katrien Vanderschoot led an engaging discussion that delved into the role and future of international development cooperation. With this docuseries, we aimed to present a positive and hopeful perspective, counterbalancing the often negative portrayal of Africa in the media. 🌍 🤝 A production by Vétérinaires Sans Frontières - Dierenartsen Zonder Grenzen Belgium for Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen in collaboration with Tibostudio. #VSF #DZG #vétérinairessansfrontières #dierenartsenzondergrenzen #ICYIZERE #Rwanda #developmentwork #resilience #sustainability

Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs) deliver basic animal health services to the most underserved livestock keepers. Despite their key role in supporting animal health, they face many challenges to remain sustainable over time, and especially when their supporting projects conclude. To contribute building a more sustainable future for CAHWs, we have developed the Handbook for planning and managing CAHW programmes. Discover how this practical guide can help project implementers and policy-makers support CAHWs integration into animal health systems, through our launch webinars: - In French on the 29 October, 12:00 CET (register here: https://t.ly/vrcEl) - In English on the 30 October, 13:00 CET (register here: https://t.ly/UC22B) We are looking forward to our fruitful discussions during the webinar !

We recently distributed 1,800 food parcels in Torodi, Niger. The presence of armed groups in western Niger has forced people to leave their homes, seriously affecting their food supply and living conditions. In addition, the situation is worsening due to the lean season that is prolonged by recent floods. In these circumstances, food aid is crucial. 💡 What did we achieve? Our packages helped 13,231 people from 1,080 displaced and 720 host families. Our food assistance meets basic needs and prevents people from selling their livestock, going into debt or having to cut back on essentials such as education and healthcare. This support ensures that families have enough to eat until the next harvest. 📃 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 - 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶 At Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgium, we are committed to helping the most vulnerable. These are often single mothers and widows. Faced with enormous challenges, these women get the support they need from our teams to turn their lives around. 🐐 In Burundi, Christella Kankindi and Ménédore Nyabenda shared their inspiring stories with us. Their examples show us how animal husbandry can help to leave a difficult past behind. 💬 Ménédore struggled for years to provide food for her seven children when her husband left her. Five years ago, she has seen her life change thanks to the goats she received. 💬 Christella, who is raising her three daughters alone, is looking forward to receiving her goats. These will help her improve her crops and renovate her house. Want to know how these women are realising their dreams and changing their futures? Read our full article and find out how goats can be a driver for change. In the Miti-Murhesa health zone, the epicentre of the mpox epidemic, the situation is worsening quickly. At the end of August, 786 cases were reported over the past two months. Just 15 days later, the total has nearly doubled, putting immense pressure on local health centres. Our surveillance system acts as the first line of defence against mpox, leveraging a professional medical network to ensure rapid response. One in three mpox cases referred to health centres in our three intervention zones—Katana, Kalehe, and Miti-Murhesa—were identified by our One Health Committees. Each committee is made of 16 members, including local residents and professionals from the animal, human, and environmental health sectors. All members are trained to recognize mpox symptoms, assess risks, and promote preventive measures within their communities. Next to these committees, we also rely on an extensive animal and human health network: a dedicated team of 172 trained community animal health workers as well as healthcare agents from Médecins du Monde Belgique - Dokters van de Wereld België. When a suspected case is detected by one of our community animal health workers, he/she reports the information to his/her supervising private veterinarian, who then alerts the nearest medical centre and coordinates patient care. The strength of our surveillance system lies in its community-based approach, working closely with and within the population. This proximity allows for early detection and swift action, making the system both efficient and effective.
