  • 🚀 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚎 🔬 🔥 How has climate change influenced wildfires globally? 🌍 An international team has recently published groundbreaking research in Nature Portfolio, uncovering how much climate change has altered burned areas—a complex question influenced by fire activity, human actions, and modeling challenges. Here are the key takeaways: 🌡️ 16% Increase in burned area globally due to climate change between 2003 and 2019. 🌏 Sharpest increases observed in: 🇦🇺 Australia 🇺🇸 California 🇷🇺 Siberia 🌾 Land use changes and population growth have also decreased burned areas in some regions, as shown in our counterfactual analysis. 🛠️ To get these insights: We used 7 advanced DGVM-fire models comparing real-world (factual) and stable climate (counterfactual) simulations. A regional weighting system improved accuracy to align with satellite-based burned area observations. 🛰️ 🔍 Key Patterns: Climate change drives an overall increase in fire activity. Human activities, like land management, can decrease fire spread in some regions. 🌿 Why does it matter? Fires reshape ecosystems, impact carbon cycles, and pose challenges for land and climate management. Understanding these interactions is crucial for mitigating wildfire risks as the climate continues to change. • 🚀 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚎 🔬 🚀 Borophane: The Hydrogen-Boosted Superconductor 🌌 We are proud to share that our long-time VSC user and researcher Jonas Bekaert from the University of Antwerp and his team have published groundbreaking research in ACS Publications! Imagine a material so thin it's almost invisible, yet powerful enough to conduct electricity without resistance. Meet hydrogenated borophene, better known as borophane – a revolutionary 2D material with the potential to transform technology as we know it! 🔬 What makes borophane special? Borophane’s crystal structure is stabilized by hydrogen atoms, which not only enhance its superconducting properties but also make it more resistant to oxidation. This breakthrough opens the door to practical, energy-efficient superconductors for next-generation devices. 🌡️ Superconductivity at its finest Hydrogen significantly raises borophane's critical temperature – the point at which it can conduct electricity without any energy loss. By stabilizing the material and making it more responsive to external factors like strain and doping, borophane achieves superconducting properties that could power ultra-efficient technologies of the future. 💻 This exciting research was made possible through first-principles calculations powered by the advanced computational resources of the VSC. The team’s theoretical framework unraveled the quantum mechanics behind borophane's remarkable superconducting behavior. 📖 Read the full publication here: https://lnkd.in/eKuYWe3E Congratulations to Jonas Bekaert and his team for this incredible achievement! 🔖 More research articles at 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚎 here https://lnkd.in/eYvbVbKf 📬 Subscribe to our newsletter and be the first to receive our latest news, events, and research articles at https://lnkd.in/eykCh2c #supercomputer #hpc #research #physics #EnergyEfficiency #NanoTechnology #QuantumMaterials #2DMaterials

  • 🚀 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚎 🔬 🌟 Breaking New Ground in Speech Neuroprosthetics 🌟 The latest research article, "Detecting imagined speech events from brain signals", which has been recently published in Nature Portfolio and is now featured in our VSC Research Showcase, presents a breakthrough in the field of speech neuroprosthetics. 🧠 Across the globe, millions face speech disorders. For those with anarthria or ALS, traditional communication methods often fall short. Enter speech neuroprostheses—devices that translate brain signals directly into speech signals, bypassing impaired motor functions. 🔬 In this groundbreaking study, researchers used electrocorticography (ECoG) to record brain signals and detect imagined speech events. The key? Harnessing VSC's powerful infrastructure to process data from 16 participants and 588 electrodes at an unprecedented scale. 🗣️ Key Findings: 🔸Imagined speech events were detected in 10 out of 16 participants. 🔸Brain regions such as the motor cortex and temporal regions showed activity changes, though imagined speech revealed the weakest signals. 🔸The study successfully analyzed transfer models between speech modes (speaking, listening, imagining speaking) and participants. 📈 Each electrode's performance in detecting speech modes was visualized, showing the challenge of detecting imagined speech compared to speaking or listening. 💡 With innovative models and high-performance computing, this research is a significant leap toward improving life-changing technologies for those unable to speak. 👉 Read here: https://lnkd.in/eFByy_4h 🔖 More research articles at 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚎 here https://lnkd.in/eYvbVbKf 📬 Subscribe to our newsletter and be the first to receive our latest news, events, and research articles at https://lnkd.in/eykCh2c #Innovation #Technology #Research #Science #STEM #AcademicResearch #ResearchAndDevelopment #ScientificResearch #ResearchInnovation #ResearchShowcase #hpc #supercomputer #data
