Taking the pulse on the development of CCS and CCU - here are some key numbers from the EU Science, Research and Innovation status report that just came out 👇 📈 Project Development in 2023 102% increase in project development from the previous year. 41 operational CCS facilities with a total capture capacity of about 49 Mt of CO₂ per year. 🏭Carbon capture cost estimates remain challenging due to varying factors, but based on current data, is in the range of: 40-90 EUR/tonnes for hard-to-abate industries (iron and steel, chemicals and cements) 40-75 EUR/t for Bioenergy with CCS 300-500 EUR/t for Direct Air Capture with CCS 🚢Cost of CO₂ transport vary significantly, are estimated to be in the range of: 2-15 EUR/t for pipelines 12-30 EUR/t for shipping 5-35 EUR/t for geological storages Who is driving R&D for CCS and CCU? CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency has built a portfolio of 103 projects involving 4.5 billion in EU funds across the value chain. Germany 🇩🇪 (EUR 45 million), France 🇫🇷 (EUR 44 million) and Denmark 🇩🇰 (EUR 30 million) were the leading Member States in annual RD&I funding within the EU.

💡What did Wopke Hoekstra, the designated EU Commissioner for Climate Action, had to say about industrial carbon management during his confirmation hearing with the European Parliament? The former Dutch minister, now tasked with leading the EU’s climate agenda, underscored the impact of industrial carbon management to transform Europe’s heavy industries. Hoekstra stressed that to drive real impact, the European Commission must take a leadership role working with European member states to scale up CCS, CCU and CDR technologies. He also called on the European Parliament to support these initiatives, noting that collaborative support will be essential to achieving meaningful actions. Hoekstra’s clear commitment signals a promising push toward large-scale industrial decarbonisation in the EU—crucial to reach net zero by 2050.
