✨ This Christmas, all we want…is for everyone to know the difference between a bacterial infection and... just a simple cold.
Taking antibiotics when they are not needed, like for a cold or a flu, can make bacteria stronger and harder to treat in the future. This contributes to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) - bacteria and other germs become resistant to antibiotics, often because they are overused or misused.
AMR is the major pandemic of our times. It is responsible for over 35,000 deaths a year in the EU alone and for €11.7 billion in health expenditure.
AMR affects humans, animals and plants, as well as the environment. This is why implementing a #OneHealth approach, involving public health, agri-food and the environmental sectors, is essential to tackle this complex threat.
🎄 This Christmas, let’s remember that AMR doesn’t take a holiday. Use antibiotics responsibly and only when prescribed by a doctor, and help safeguard their effectiveness for future generations.
