As you probably know from one of our recent posts, N-SIDE has started collaborating with SSEN Transmission , one of the Scottish transmission owners. 🏴 In the new NIA project named 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿 (#YAhOO), we are both investigating the use of 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀 to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of planned outage management processes. In particular, the following innovative algorithms will be implemented and tested during the YAhOO project: 👉 An outage 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 algorithm, used to identify the conflicts and incompatibilities in the existing outage planning. This algorithm will allow planning engineers to assess the feasibility of the outage planning after changes have been applied manually. 👉 A 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 algorithm, used to identify possible changes for an individual outage request, constraints preventing a specific change, and the impact on KPIs of a feasible change. This algorithm will allow planning engineers to assess if a requested change in the planning is acceptable. 👉 An 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 algorithm to solve identified conflicts, schedule new outage requests, apply requested changes, and improve the outage planning based on a defined objective function. This algorithm will allow planning engineers to optimize the outage planning holistically. 𝘐𝘯 𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢 𝘸𝘦𝘣 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘮𝘴.🎯 The newly developed system should progressively replace complex Excel sheets and allow to 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 of the outage planning process. 👏 In particular, it should 𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙨 to process change requests more 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮, 𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙚 response times, and 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙪𝙥 the team to add value to the outage planning function, such as improved engagement with key stakeholders. 👀 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 about the expected benefits of the YAhOO system can be found in the preliminary Cost Benefit Analysis performed by SSEN Transmission and available on the project page of the Energy Networks Association (ENA) portal: https://lnkd.in/eZGGzsUv

💪 Hard work is being done on congestion solutions in the Netherlands. 🇳🇱 TenneT is involved in plenty of initiatives to ensure a better utilization of the network infrastructure and since May 2024, N-SIDE and TenneT have been collaborating on a crucial aspect of congestion management: Accurately 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. ⏪ This journey started back in April 2023, when N-SIDE was shortlisted within the Open Innovation Program of TenneT to help the Dutch operator address the challenge of 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗱. After a few months, during the final event of the program, N-SIDE was awarded by the jury and TenneT decided to further work together on this use case. 🤝 👉 N-SIDE Energy has developed a methodology to move away from the traditional point forecast and leverage the additional insights which can be obtained through a probabilistic risk distribution. This innovative methodology enhances existing node forecasts and takes into account various sources of uncertainty when calculating potential congestion across the entire network. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱, 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀. 🧠 N-SIDE’s solution is data-driven and relies on machine learning, advanced power flow simulations and probabilistic methods. This algorithm can operate both day-ahead and near-real-time. Sjoerd Kop, Project Manager from TenneT’s side, said: “𝙖𝙩 𝙏𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙏, 𝙬𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙖𝙨 𝙉-𝙎𝙄𝘿𝙀 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙪𝙨 𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙨”.
