Bulgarian-Romanian Observatory of Digital Media (BROD)
About us
The Bulgarian-Romanian Observatory of Digital Media aims at creating a multinational, multi-stakeholder, and multidisciplinary regional hub for detection, analysis and combating disinformation circulating in Bulgaria and Romania. Such an observatory is urgently needed and very relevant in the region, which due to the poor media freedom and low citizen media and information literacy is highly prone to coordinated internal and external disinformation campaigns aiming at the EU. BROD brings together some of the most renowned researchers, media literacy providers, journalists, and policy partners active in the region, and the biggest fact-checker worldwide, AFP with its fact-checking operations in Bulgaria and Romania. BROD aims to be a regional hub building on knowledge and research excellence in digital media and accelerating the efforts to fight disinformation through national and regional fact-checking, media literacy, and policy measures, addressing short and long-term challenges in this key EU region. BROD hub will offer world-leading expertise, locally adapted multilingual tools, and capabilities for rapid detection and analysis of disinformation campaigns. It will enable multistakeholder, cross-border collaboration and ground breaking research comparing harmful disinformation narratives and their impact on society and democracy across states, cultures, and languages. It will also provide media literacy activities, fact-checks and media and disinformation research to meet the needs of national and regional media and public authorities and perform continuous regional and national-level monitoring and evaluation of the disinformation policies and responses implemented by the online platforms. BROD will be integrated with the European Digital Media Observatory, through joint research, provision of fact-checks, disinformation investigations, and educational materials, and with the TrulyMedia platform (by ATC) of Romanian and Bulgarian disinformation analysis tools.
