Are you aware of the diverse and significant impacts drones misuse can have? From re-writing the rules on the battlefield, to disrupting airport operations, drones are being used in criminal activities and assassination attempts. A few examples: -Stockholm Arlanda Airport: In September 2024, the airport was temporarily closed after four drones were spotted over the area. This led to a halt in takeoffs and landings for a couple of hours -Gatwick airport drone attack. A 33-hour disruption, affecting around 1,000 flights and over 140,000 passengers. The estimated economic loss from this incident was approximately €55.8 million, primarily impacting airlines. 143 Flights canceled at Frankfurt airport due to drone sighting. 05.2019 and 2021. -Dublin Airport drone incidents were several incursions of drones into airspace around Dublin Airport, including a series in early 2023, which caused disruption of airport operations. -Madrid and Riga Airports: These airports have also experienced major disruptions due to unauthorized drone activities since 2020 According to BBC News from 08.2018 “Well-organized” gang flew drones carrying drugs into prison. Venezuelan president survived apparent drone assassination attempt in 2018 The Gunman flew drone over rally site in advance of attempt to assassinate Trump. Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survives an assassination attempt when two armed drones target his residence in Baghdad's Green Zone area. While al-Kadhimi is uninjured, seven of his security guards are injured in the attack. It’s clear that while drones offer many benefits, their misuse poses serious challenges. What we need besides of Effective regulation are technological innovations -crucial to mitigating these risks.
