🌊 She Fishes for Change 🌊 This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the resilience of Guanabara Bay’s fisherwomen—women who are cleaning one of Brazil’s most iconic ecosystems and preserving a way of life. Facing pollution that threatens both marine life and their livelihoods, they are reclaiming their environment, their profession, and their future. Through BVRio’s Fishing for Litter programme, in partnership with Ogyre, these women are proving that environmental action and social equity go hand in hand. “We used to fill our nets with fish. Now, we pull up plastic. But instead of giving up, we’re fighting back for our families, our bay, and our future.” – Binha, Fisherwoman By empowering fisherwomen with fair wages and creating a circular economy, this initiative is transforming lives and ecosystems. But more support is needed to scale up. 🔹 How you can help us further this initiative: ✅ Donate – Fund PPE, training & legal support for fisherwomen ✅ Advocate – Push for policies that recognise informal waste workers ✅ Partner – Help replicate this model globally 📖 Read the full story and learn more at bvrio.org/fishingforlitter #IWD2025 #CircularEconomy #SDG5 #WasteManagement #ESG

Exciting Update from Our Partner Company, KOLEKT Last week, Thierry Sanders, KOLEKT founder, met with the app development team in India to discuss the next steps for enhancing the platform. The focus is on improving user experience and strengthening the technological infrastructure to support a comprehensive suite of systems for reverse logistics policies. At BVRio, we are proud to collaborate with KOLEKT to drive innovation, empower communities, improve waste management, and create scalable solutions for a circular economy. This partnership underscores our shared commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable development and effective reverse logistics systems. #CircularEconomy #Innovation #ReverseLogistics #TechForGood
Fresh from discussions with the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme member countries about financing options for addressing plastic pollution, Kolekt Founder, Thierry Sanders, met with the Kolekt app development team in India last week to discuss future developments that will both improve user experience, but also further develop the architecture for a suite of EPR systems. “Insights from users has always been fundamental to Kolekt’s development agenda. Added to our experience of helping the Government of Mozambique establish a new EPR system, the discussions we recently had with the South Asian countries has given us a clear picture of the development needs linked to EPR, and a plan for some new features.” Read more about these plans: https://lnkd.in/eRMawkn8 #EPR #Plasticpollution #financing #wastemanagement #waste #recycling #extendedproducerresponsibility

🌍 Expanding Climate Finance: A Broader Approach 🌍 Great article by Suzi Kerr and colleagues, highlighting the urgent need for a much wider range of financial instruments to tackle the climate crisis. Their research underscores what we’ve long observed: voluntary carbon markets (VCM) and carbon credits play a role but are just two components of every scenario. This article reinforces the need for integrated financial strategies—leveraging public, private, and market-based mechanisms—to close the climate finance gap. The more diverse and effective these mechanisms are, the greater our chances of success. BVRio's mission, to develop market-based solutions to implement environmental policies, has put us at the forefront of designing and testing climate financial tools—whether for forest protection, circular economy, or sustainable land use. Yet, one of the biggest barriers remains the lack of interest in financing climate solutions at scale. 📖 Read the full article on the link below #ClimateFinance #CarbonMarkets #GreenEconomy #VCM
Can we fill the climate finance gap and stop climate change? It's not easy but I'm optimistic. The global climate finance gap will be hard to fill unless we can both grow public finance and international carbon markets and more effectively leverage the funding they provide to mobilize private sector finance. In a recently accepted paper in npj Climate Action my fantastic co-author Xian Hu from Tsinghua University, China, and I created a simple model to explore different ways we could succeed. We underscore the importance of holistic transition plans and mechanisms that combine strong incentives for effective implementation and public, private, and market support. The figure below shows one pathway that is ambitious but possible - it involves successful Article 6 and CORSIA markets and really effective leverage of private capital - and efficient use of those funds. The more successful we are with any one type of effort the better are our chances of overall success. Last week, BVRio delivered a communications workshop for waste cooperatives in Rio, hosted by Coopama—one of the cooperatives receiving our support to implement investments from Petrobras Socioambiental. The session focused on empowerment, how to position themselves as the stewards of their own future and strengthening cooperativism as a force for professionalising the recycling sector. The stronger these cooperatives become, the better they can manage investments, improve working conditions, and claim their rightful place as key players in fighting waste pollution. As we mark World Waste Pickers Day this Saturday, 1st March, we call on businesses and investors to fund a just transition—one where financial mechanisms align with socially inclusive standards, ensuring waste pickers are not just part of the system but leaders within it. ⤵️ Read our full article on how environmental finance must prioritise social justice #JustTransition #WasteManagement #Recycling #CircularEconomy #GreenFinance #ESG

Our 'SojaCheck' tool has been included in a list of 'top technology trends shaping confectionary in 2025' by Confectionary News magazine 💚 The free tool for assessing deforestation and conversion of native vegetation at the farm level for soy production areas in the Cerrado, Brazil, can be used by anyone with a farm CAR Number and includes data on over 92,000 farms, an area of over 61 million ha, providing assurance of DCF soy in supply chains. Congratulations to our development team here. The number of searches hit nearly 160,000 at the end of last year, so we knew it was proving a useful tool to the food industry, but it's always nice to receive this kind of recognition 👏 https://lnkd.in/eTzDaGz8 #conservation #sustainableagriculture #supplychain #commodities #soja #soy #foodproduction #foodmanufacturing #grocery #foodprocessing #confectionary

Fantastic news from BVRio Group company KOLEKT. The Kolekt app is already in use in Mozambique, and in Brazil by our Fishing for Litter programme, and is currently being rolled-out to the waste picker cooperatives in Rio who we are supporting to enhance operational efficiency by digitising their record-keeping.
We are pleased to announce that Plastic Collective will start using the KOLEKT waste management app to monitor all its plastics purchasing and processing transactions by its partner projects in Ghana and Indonesia. The plastic collection and recycling projects are funded by The World Bank through its innovative and transformational sustainable development outcome bond of $100 million, of which part of the returns will fund the plastics projects over the next seven years. “Kolekt is a perfect fit for our needs, which are to ensure full compliance and traceability of our plastic recovery projects per the terms of the World Bank Plastic Waste Reduction Linked Bond. Through this collaboration we also hope to enhance investor confidence in the plastic waste management asset class which is severely under-funded. We love that Kolekt has been built from the waste picker level up, facilitating both full volume traceability and fair waste picker compensation.” Steve Hardman, CEO, Plastic Collective. BVRio, with support from the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, is helping recycling cooperatives strengthen their businesses with critical upgrades for better logistics, including new collection trucks and digital waste tracking through the KOLEKT waste management app. With new trucks, cooperatives can now collect larger volumes and higher-value materials, reducing costs and increasing revenue. At the same time, digital tracking is being introduced to improve record-keeping and operational management. These improvements are already making a difference—boosting efficiency, increasing collection capacity, and helping cooperatives operate more professionally. You can learn more about how we are helping to build a more inclusive and efficient recycling sector in Brazil. https://lnkd.in/eyi4bCWV #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement #Recycling #EPR
