🎵 Forty years since the #BandAid concert, the false narrative about a broken continent plagued by poverty, conflict, corruption and disease still persists. The re-recording of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ accompanied by a new video containing footage of the 1984 Ethiopian famine has sparked debate about its problematic lyrics and imagery that perpetuate negative stereotypes about Africa. In this episode of Tortoise Media’s #TheNewsMeeting, Founder and CEO of Futurelect Lindiwe Mazibuko speaks about the controversial charity single and the “prejudice premium” faced by African sovereign states because of biased global narratives about conflict, corruption, and instability. 🔊 #VolumeUp at 13:56 to hear what Lindiwe says about the true cost of negative stereotypes about Africa 👉 https://bit.ly/3B6GPQP Access the report that we co-authored with Africa No Filter that reveals how Africa loses up to $4.2 billion annually in inflated interest payments on sovereign debt due to negative media stereotypes: https://bit.ly/4dEG66v #WeKnowItsChristmas #AfricaRising #SovereignDebt #MediaNarratives #InvestmentInAfrica #EconomicDevelopment #Stereotypes #ChangeTheNarrative

🇪🇹 The House of People’s Representatives has introduced a 581.98 billion birr (USD 4.5 billion) supplementary budget, first announced in August, increasing total allocations for the year to 1.5 trillion birr—a 56% increase from the original budget passed in July. While the specifics of allocation remain unclear, early indicators suggest that key areas like civil servant salary adjustments and offsetting the impacts of the summer’s macroeconomic reforms, through subsidies on essential goods, are at the forefront of this decision. This significant move highlights Ethiopia’s commitment to bolstering economic recovery through the Homegrown Economic Reform agenda and addressing rising living costs. 📊 Take a look at our infographic below, which outlined the initial allocation of Ethiopia’s budgetary funds. With the addition of a 581.98 billion birr supplementary budget, priorities may shift. What areas do you think should be the focus for this significant increase in funding? Let’s discuss! #EthiopiaBudget #EconomicRecovery #FiscalPolicy
🇪🇹 Ethiopia's parliament recently approved a record-breaking budget of 971.2 billion birr ($16.83 billion) for the 2024/25 fiscal year(July - June). This significant increase (21.1%) from the previous year reflects the government's ambitious development plans, despite ongoing macroeconomic challenges. Increased allocations in sectors such as education and health reflect a focus on long-term development while maintaining essential services. However, the 358.5 billion birr deficit raises questions about financing strategies. Will Ethiopia turn to domestic borrowing or seek external support? The government's approach to managing this deficit will be crucial for the country's economic trajectory. 🌍 Our expert advisory services delve into how (geo)politics, policy, business, society, and media shape your operating environment, giving you the insights needed to navigate with confidence.
