As the nation strives towards sustainable growth, the principles outlined in the 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 are increasingly relevant. The Manifesto is a collaborative effort involving 15 African Green Building Councils, the World Green Building Council, and partners from the #BuildingToCOP coalition, including C40 Cities, We Mean Business, and the UN High-Level Climate Champions. It emphasises on the importance of sustainable practices in the construction sector to reduce emissions and promote green jobs. We invite stakeholders to share their expertise and knowledge by participating in a discussion on various policies (water, energy, finance, material, and infrastructure) and their role in achieving a sustainable, low-carbon built environment. Specifically, we would value your insights on the current policy landscape, and the current opportunities and challenges. In addition, we would like your views on any proposed policies that are new to Mauritius. Your participation in the discussion would significantly contribute to fostering a deeper understanding of how national policies and initiatives align with those suggested in the manifesto. This collaborative approach will offer an overview of where we are, what the issues are, and what we can aspire to next for sustainable cities and the built environment. 🖱Stakeholders to register on the following link – https://lnkd.in/dsPF97Fc Oloo Adhiambo ZELDA KERUBO Dominika Czerwinska #GBCM #AfricaManifesto #SustainableCities #BuiltEnvironment

  • Africa contributes less than 4% of global emissions yet bears the brunt of climate change, facing economic losses, migration, and instability. Taking 𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒆 action is not just about environmental stewardship—it’s sound economic policy. The cost of inaction is far greater than decisive efforts today. It’s time to amplify Africa’s voice in global climate discussions.

Extreme heat waves and temperatures are soaring, which means that sustainable cooling is no longer a luxury, but a critical necessity for survival and prosperity. Following the landmark launch of the Global Cooling Pledge in 2023, world leaders came together at this month’s #COP29 to chart a bold path forward for sustainable cooling in #ClimateAction plans due in 2025, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs): https://lnkd.in/dH9t5-_a

    • New national climate plans must include sustainable cooling solutions to deliver required cuts in emissions whilst increasing our adaptation and resilience to extreme heat.

Did you know that 161 of 195 countries reference buildings as part of their #NDCs, but only 19 provide extensive sector-specific detail, and only three #NDCs incorporate a building code aligned to #netzero operational emissions? Superficial changes aren’t enough anymore. That's why, at COP29 Azerbaijan, we’re calling on governments and industry to #BeBoldOnBuildings. Be bold and ambitious in your policies and in your national climate action plans (NDCs). We need plans that are implementable. So it is essential to develop robust national policies and financing frameworks with clear links to #NDCs, supported by #decarbonisation and climate resilience roadmaps for the building and construction sector. WorldGBC and the global Green Building Council (GBC) network are collaborating to roll out the Zero Carbon and Climate Resilience Readiness Framework (ZCCRRF). The ZCCRF will prepare the public, private, finance and academic sectors for the enabling actions to drive and accelerate the development of national roadmaps. The ZCCRRF integrates market readiness into five pillars: Government Leadership, Technical Solutions, Finance, Data, and Mindset. There are 22 countries participating in this framework: Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Ecuador, Guatemala, Venezuela, El Salvador, Panama, Egypt, Tunisia, Emirates, Lebanon, Morocco, Jordan, Iraq, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. Read more about the ZCCRRF here: https://lnkd.in/dDjKddG6 It’s time for world leaders to #BeBoldOnBuildings at #COP29 and beyond. Your local Green Building Council (GBC) is ready to help you. • 🌍 LEADERS OF THE INDUSTRY, TIME TO DREAM HIGHER! 🌞 Yesterday, at the National Renewable Energy Dialogue held at Botho University, we were honored to hear Botswana’s Vice President, Mr. Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, challenge our ambitions and inspire our vision for a greener Botswana. His call was clear: it’s time to elevate our sights and maximize Botswana’s renewable energy potential. With 3,200 hours of sunshine annually, Botswana is primed to be a global hub for solar energy—and as members of the Botswana Green Building Council, we’re committed to making this vision a reality. VP Mr Gaolathe emphasized that we can “Live again, Dream again, Laugh again” as we build a Botswana that leads Africa in renewable energy, with a committed target of reducing carbon emissions by 15% by 2030. Let’s rise to this challenge! By cultivating knowledge, fostering good character, and embracing collaboration, we can forge a future where Botswana stands tall in the renewable energy industry. 𝗕𝗢𝗧𝗦𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗔 𝗧𝗢 𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝟴, 𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗘𝗚𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗣𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧 𝗔𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦 𝗔𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗔 - Solar will be the anchor - New Botswana will produce global power companies - BPC will be unbundled, transmission will stand alone, generation will be open for managed private sector competition 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 | 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 The Vice President of the Republic of Botswana, Ndaba Gaolathe, has underscored that the country has the potential to generate over 8,000 megawatts of power, which will be pursued under the new administration. Speaking at a renewable energy dialogue in Gaborone, Gaolathe, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, emphasized Botswana's potential to become a global renewable energy hub, given its abundant solar resources. “The Integrated Resource Plan, established by the previous administration, aimed to produce over 1,200 megawatts. In this new government, we believe that is not enough—Botswana has the potential to generate over 8,000 megawatts for export across Africa,” he stated. Gaolathe outlined how the new government plans to transform the energy sector and foster a “green economy.” A key strategy is the unbundling of Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), allowing transmission to operate independently and encouraging innovation and technology adoption in the sector. “We need to break up the power chain,” Gaolathe explained. “Separating transmission will attract more advanced technology, enabling modernization and allowing companies with expertise to excel in this space. Power generation should involve managed competition, giving others the opportunity to participate.” Gaolathe emphasized that in the "new Botswana," individuals with innovative ideas will have the chance to contribute to economic growth. “With the right technology and interconnections, we can collectively create global power companies capable of lighting all of Africa. It’s an exciting vision,” he remarked. Gaolathe expressed confidence in Botswana's potential, pointing to global examples of success. “This vision is achievable. Decades ago, in one of my first jobs in New York, I was building mathematical models and structuring greenfield projects for the power sectors in North America, Canada, and South America. They were already implementing what we now envision, so this is not just theory. These are practical, achievable steps that can transform the lives of our people.”
