Do you know what the buzz is around #decarbonisation, policy, finance and #circularity in sustainable building for 2025? Over the last two days, we’ve hosted webinars for our partners to discuss the 2025 global trends. Here are some highlights: 🗾 Zero Carbon & Climate Resilience Roadmaps: National decarbonisation roadmaps can be used as a tool to coordinate action across the value chain and between industry and policymakers. 🏛️ Whole Life Carbon Policy: Europe has a clear trajectory towards implementing policy that will regulate carbon emissions across the whole building life cycle. Now that the #COP29 official text references the need to curb embodied carbon emissions, WorldGBC believes this trend will expand to other regions. ♻️ Circularity is going mainstream in the #builtenvironment with start-ups and multinationals delivering products and services that support closing the loop on materials. WorldGBC is collaborating with the @Circular Buildings Coalition and supporting pioneering Blueprint Projects tackling specific barriers to increased uptake of circular approaches. 💰 #SustainableFinance is a hot topic due to the Green Taxonomies and the recent commitment at #COP29 to a New Collective Quantified Goal of financing $300 billion. In the built environment we’re seeing signals of a shift away from proliferation towards convergence. WorldGBC is supporting this shift with guidance and resources like our ESG Factsheet. Are EU policies on track to achieve their climate goals of fully decarbonised buildings by 2050? Use our new interactive tool to take stock of progress. Our EU Building Policy Tracker provides an at-a-glance view of the policies in place, what’s on track, and where further action is needed to address the environmental impact of buildings and deliver on the EU’s climate targets. These are arranged across four key policy areas: 🏗️ Building regulations ♻️ Waste and circularity 💰Sustainable finance 🌳 Sustainable procurement The tracker, which will be regularly updated, monitors the EU’s progress against the recommendations set out in our EU Policy Whole Life Carbon Roadmap, launched in 2022. View the tracker here: https://lnkd.in/d9uzWTkb What does the tracker show? The revision of building regulations such as the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) stands out as a positive development including measures such as Minimum Energy Performance Standards and Whole Life Carbon provisions. Much remains to be addressed for waste and circularity, but the revision of the Construction Products Regulation will drive greater transparency and data availability on products' environmental impacts. The EU also has further work to do on sustainable finance and procurement policy. We will assess how future updates to the EU Taxonomy, Procurement Directive, and Green Public Procurement address the impact of the built environment. The tracker has been developed alongside the Europe Regional Network of Green Building Councils as part of the #BuildingLife project. Ylva is a Finnish company that focuses on real estate investment and the restaurant industry. In 2023, the business released its sustainability report, which revealed something it didn’t expect — they weren’t as responsible as they thought. 🏢 Signatories of our Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment (the Commitment) are dedicated to #decarbonising their assets and promoting advanced climate leadership action. In the next instalment of our ‘From Commitment to Action’ series, we spotlight the work already being done by Ylva and how the business wants to challenge itself and the building and construction sector to #BeBoldOnBuildings. What will Ylva do to meet their commitments? Read their full ‘From Commitment to Action’ interview below to find out. #BuildingTheTransition #BuildingToCOP #BuidlingToCOP30

#DidYouKnow that buildings account for 37% of global energy related carbon emissions? What if we can change that? The World Green Building Council’s European Regional Network (ERN) is working alongside 12 Green Building Councils to cut down emissions from buildings across Europe through #BuildingLife. The project is working to deliver on the European Green Deal aim of a climate neutral Europe by 2050. By working to eliminate both the operational and embodied carbon – ‘Whole Life Carbon’ (WLC) – impact of buildings, our shared goal is for Europe to get behind #BuildingLife, and become the world’s first fully climate neutral continent. We’re proud to have supported our #BuildingLife funders the IKEA Foundation in this new video, led by WorldGBC’s head of ERN Laura Pallares. Find out how we’re working together in #BuildingTheTransition through #BuildingLife. How can EU Member States get ready for the introduction of life cycle global warming potential (GWP) measures for buildings? By 2030, EU countries must calculate and disclose ‘whole life carbon’ (WLC) or ‘life cycle GWP’ covering the full life cycle of new buildings — introduced in the last update of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). This includes both operational and embodied carbon emissions. 🏛️ National governments also need to publish roadmaps by the start of 2027 that outline #WLC limit values and targets. Our new policy briefing provides recommendations for governments on how to prepare for the introduction of these measures, including: 🏗️ Construction sector capacity building 📈 Databases and data collection 🤝 Encouraging compliance Plus recommendations for the European Commission on how to support implementation. Find out more: https://bit.ly/3YsDTa7 The successful implementation of life cycle GWP measures is crucial in aligning the #builtenvironment with Europe's ambitious climate goals. WorldGBC and the Europe Regional Network of over 20 Green Building Councils are ready to support with this transition. How can built environment businesses 🏗️ navigate 🧭 the nexus of health ❤️🩹, safety 🦺 and sustainability 🌿? Next Thursday (5th Dec) is the RICS Global Sustainability Conference 🌍 and I’ll be speaking on a panel in the afternoon that explores this trifecta. I'm very much looking forward to the insights of fellow panelists Angela Terry of charity, One Home; Henry Dawson of Cardiff Metropolitan University and Raman K at Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) South Asia. All expertly moderated by Cliff L'Aimable of BUILDING CONTROL SURVEYORS LTD For my part I shall be sharing insights from World Green Building Council's "Social Impact Across the Built Environment" report, to show how taking a social value lens can help deliver the health, safety and sustainability outcomes we want. I'll try not to smile as cheesily as I did for this headshot. #BeBoldOnBuildings #BuildingTheTransition
