Council for Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta

About us

The Council for Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta (CAAC), operating as Africa Centre, was incorporated in 2006. We are the largest pan African non-profit organization in western Canada, serving as a community hub that provides programs and services from a place of cultural awareness and competency to the families in our diverse community. We acknowledge the diversity of our cultural background as a source of the strength that brings capacity and competencies to shape a thriving community in Alberta. We have a strong African indigenous cultural foundation incorporated across our programs and services.

  • As Family Violence Prevention Month comes to an end, Africa Centre remains steadfast in our commitment to building safer and healthier communities. This month, we’ve highlighted the importance of awareness, shared culturally relevant resources, and addressed the unique challenges faced by individuals, families, and older adults in our communities. The work doesn’t stop here. Together, we can advocate for change by continuing to raise awareness, foster understanding, and support those impacted by family violence. If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence, the Government of Alberta's Family Violence Info Line is available toll-free at 310-1818. Accessible 24/7, the private service offers support in over 170 languages for all Albertans. For culturally specific resources and assistance tailored to the unique needs of the African descent community, visit www.africacentre.ca or connect directly with our programs. Let us continue the conversation and work together toward building a future free from family violence. #wheretorun

  • Older adults are increasingly being exposed to varying degrees of emotional, social, physical, and financial abuse, which can leave a lasting and negative impact on their well-being. Africa Centre’s Seniors Well-being and Engagement Program has been committed to addressing this critical issue by developing resources, raising awareness, and promoting family violence prevention to help protect older adults in the African descent community. In this video, we’ll show you an example of the abuse some African descent seniors face, and how it can affect their lives. If you or an older adult you know is experiencing family violence, reach out to our Seniors Well-being and Engagement Program by email at acsp@africacentre.ca, for support and resources that can help you in your advocacy journey. #wheretorun

  • Where do we go from here in continuing to secure funding for African descent communities today? Lisa Ross-Rodriguez, Assistant Deputy Minister, Newcomer and Multicultural Supports, Government of Alberta, joined us for an insightful fireside chat. This session explored how non-profits can better understand and access funding opportunities, while highlighting the role of government in supporting and advocating for African descent communities. Moderated by Samuel Juru, Africa Centre’s Executive Director, the conversation provided an invaluable opportunity for non-profits to learn directly from government officials, gaining insights into funding processes and building stronger connections for future collaboration. #BlackFuturesReimagined
