Older adults are increasingly being exposed to varying degrees of emotional, social, physical, and financial abuse, which can leave a lasting and negative impact on their well-being. Africa Centre’s Seniors Well-being and Engagement Program has been committed to addressing this critical issue by developing resources, raising awareness, and promoting family violence prevention to help protect older adults in the African descent community. In this video, we’ll show you an example of the abuse some African descent seniors face, and how it can affect their lives. If you or an older adult you know is experiencing family violence, reach out to our Seniors Well-being and Engagement Program by email at acsp@africacentre.ca, for support and resources that can help you in your advocacy journey. #wheretorun

🌍 Addressing Domestic Violence: A Call to Action Recently, I received a heartfelt message from Hoor-ul-ain Ahmed and Aleeha Amir, seeking my support for their project on domestic violence. Their initiative reminded me of the importance of raising awareness and advocating for change on this critical issue. Domestic violence is a pervasive problem affecting countless individuals, often going unnoticed. It's our collective responsibility to bring this issue to the forefront and work towards solutions. Here are a few points to consider: Awareness Saves Lives: Understanding the signs and impact of domestic violence is the first step towards prevention and support. Education and Empowerment: Providing resources and support systems can empower victims to seek help and break free from abusive environments. Community Engagement: It’s crucial for all of us to engage in conversations and initiatives that address domestic violence and provide aid to those affected. I encourage everyone to reflect on this issue and think about how we can contribute to the solution. Thank you, Hoor-ul-ain and Aleeha, for your dedication to this cause and for inspiring others to stand against domestic violence. Together, we can create a safer world! #DomesticViolence #Awareness #Advocacy #Empowerment #SocialImpact #TogetherForChange

Raise awareness about domestic violence! 1 women is dying every 4 days so far in 2024! Killed by people they know, love/loved, people in their community. It is time to act and hold each other accountable. I do think we need a Royal Commission to have fresh eyes on the situation but listen to every side and get the money where it is needed most to keep our community safe, change the laws to ensure a victim has the opportunity to reset and attempt to diffuse the situation before another person dies. Once the commission is complete create a peak advocacy body like we have for carers in foster and kinship. Have a body who can be advocates for survivors and victims families to ensure our community is kept accountable, safe and best practices are maintained on all sides. The scary part for me is we don’t talk in figures of kids affected by domestic violence. No one knows the numbers of kids who see, know, hide from or live with domestic violence every day. The lack of transparency around this issue means there is no way to predict repeat generational abuse, to attempt to change the future paths of some of these kids who need us most. It’s time for change #stopdomesticviolence #SpeakUp

A heartbreaking number: In 2023, two children were murdered each day in Ecuador, mostly during confrontations between organized criminal groups. Many of them were under four years old. Although violence has impacted everyone, why have children been disproportionately affected by rising violence in Ecuador? Our latest story breaks down what is happening and how our teams are working to protect children in the some of the areas hit hardest by violence: https://lnkd.in/em8UQ56N
