Last Thursday, we hosted our inaugural The Legal Innovation Forum, Financial Services Workshop in New York. These sector specific, highly engaged programs focus on identifying and engaging with the key challenges that legal department leaders are contending with at the intersection of business and law. Specifically, when it comes to navigating the risk-on world that organizations (and legal practitioners within them) are wrestling with on a daily basis. Our participants last week were senior legal leaders from the institutional finance space (investment banks, hedge funds, private equity) and Sidley Austin LLP Austin (led by Benson Cohen who's a partner there) were the event's generous hosts. Using a five step process - inspired by Bridgewater's founder, Ray Dalio's Principles - our participants (in working groups of 7-8) tackled the core challenges facing financial institutions' legal, compliance and risk functions: ➡️ Managing emerging regulations ➡️ Black swan events ➡️ Regulatory inquiry ➡️ Credit crisis and counterparty default ➡️ Payment/trade error They collaborated to outline the key goals of these functions in relation to these challenges, identified the problems underlying them and then moved on to diagnosis. When we reconvene in NYC, Q1 next year to move on to the next steps in the process: design + doing. The workshop was also framed with a fireside chat - chaired by Benson Cohen - focused on the theme: Evolution of the legal ecosystem: an inflection point with Ray Brescia, Mollie Nichols + David Rosen sharing their insights and cont. We also had a presentation from Pratik Patel from Elevate that focused on goal setting for today’s legal department. Context is everything and all of our speakers and presenters set the stage and the why for the workshop's heavy lift. Post workshop - we moved onto the British Residence next to the UN for a special reception co-hosted with UK's HM Trade Commissioner for North America's Niall Mackenzie CBE and the UK's Department for Business and Trade. LIF collaborated extremely closely with key colleagues to bring this concept to life: David Rosen (co-founder of Catylex), Pratik Patel (co-founder of Elevate) and Nora Steinman (Director, Marketing Catylex). It was a fantastic experience collaborating with them all - and one of the personal highlights of my career to date (as well as a lot of fun...). Special thanks to our partners for helping us bring this to life: Sidley Austin LLP, Catylex, Elevate, iManage, DiliTrust, doeLEGAL, a DiliTrust company, RegAlytics, Protiviti, Alexa Translations and Albany Law School. And special thanks to Ray Brescia, Andrew Downes and Rytas Stankunas for all their help with bringing this vision to life over the past 6 months. Look out for more of these learning focused workshops to come in H1 2025 in New York, London, Atlanta + Toronto!
