The BC SUPPORT Unit is a multi-partner organization create to support patient-oriented research in British Columbia.
About us
Part of Michael Smith Health Research BC, the BC SUPPORT (Support for People and Patient-Oriented Research and Trials) Unit supports, streamlines and increases patient-oriented research throughout BC. Patient-oriented research is done in partnership with patients, answers research questions that matter to patients, and aims to improve health care. The Unit is one of several SUPPORT Units established across the country as part of Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) led by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Along with partner organizations, a Provincial Hub based in Vancouver serves stakeholders within the Vancouver region and provides province-wide services. Four additional regional centres (Fraser Centre, Interior Centre, Northern Centre and Vancouver Island Centre) are the first point of contact for stakeholders located outside of the Vancouver region. Services include providing services to researchers, patients, health care providers and health system decision makers, and facilitating initiatives identified as provincial priorities.

How can patient partners help share a study’s findings? They can co-present at community meetings or scientific conferences. They can also give out study infographics, videos and other materials. Like every journey, every research project is unique. Our road map tool guides you through ways that patient and public partners can meaningfully engage in a project, from start to finish. We’re thrilled to announce the release of CIHR's Anti-Ableism Action Plan! This plan, co-developed with people with lived experience of disability, outlines 32 specific actions CIHR can take around who, what and how we fund research, and our organizational culture, to remove barriers for persons with disabilities at CIHR and in the broader health research system. With this plan, CIHR aims to contribute to a more inclusive, anti-ableist health research system. Read the plan and join us in helping to drive change: https://lnkd.in/egi6UGvB

Are you a patient partner, researcher, university staff, or health research funding organization staff who has experience on academic health research? If so, we would love your input! Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit , Horizon Health Network, and Centre for Research in Integrated Care, UNB are conducting a study to explore the barriers and facilitators to compensating patient partners. Your insights will contribute to learning more about the barriers to providing and receiving patient compensation and the impacts on equity-denied groups. Once data collection is finished, patient partners can help analyze and interpret a study’s findings. They can identify themes from interviews or focus groups. They can also highlight key takeaways from the findings, to share with patients, communities or the public. Like every journey, every research project is unique. Check out our top stories and highlights this fall: 1. Q&A on patient-oriented research with Dr. Davina Banner-Lukaris “Patient partnerships humanize the research process. When a patient partner shares their experiences, we all become patients. It changes the lens – it changes it all. There’s just a different level of insight that’s achieved.” Read the interview: https://bit.ly/3Aoai8m 2. BC SUPPORT Unit: Our impact The BC SUPPORT Unit transforms how people’s experiences shape health research and health care. We support vital work in all of BC’s health regions and beyond to advance patient engagement in research. Learn about our impact: https://bit.ly/4eYipY8 3. Patient committee uplifts rural, remote perspectives in BC’s interior “As patients in rural and remote areas, we bring with us a lived experience that just can’t be experienced in a city,” says Paul Burgener, a patient partner and resident of Nelson. “What works in an urban centre won’t always work in a rural and remote community. We need to be a part of decisions that are made about us.” Read the story: https://bit.ly/3ZPCmfb #PatientOrientedResearch #HealthResearch #Health Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada Michael Smith Health Research BC Interior Health Authority University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC)
