Inspiring the exploration of individual and societal connections to BC’s mining; its past, present and future.

About us

The Britannia Mine Museum is a self-sustaining, non-profit organization, that creates accessible learning experiences to inspire discovery and connection through guided interpretive programming, self-exploration opportunities, and the preservation of our historical site and artifacts. Governed by the Britannia Mine Museum Society, the museum allows guests to leave with a better understanding of mining in British Columbia; past, present and future. Britannia Mine museum features the iconic Mill building, a National Historic Site as well as many other exhibits and programs. We underwent significant re-branding and renovations in 2010 and have been continuing to grow and innovate ever since, including the launch of BOOM!, a multi-sensory show, in 2019. Our Vision is to deliver an entertaining; world class experience that encourages an informed understanding of mining and its' impact to the environment, communities and sustainability. Britannia Mine Museum’s ability to offer relevant, innovative, engaging and adventuresome learning opportunities has helped us draw increasing numbers of visitors from around the world, and attract a strong and diverse donor base. As a registered charity operated by a small but passionate staff team, we pride ourselves on our self-sufficiency, with our primary sources of revenue coming through memberships, admissions, site rentals, the Museum's Gift Shop, Café, and donations.

A message from Executive Director, Cheryl Hendrickson. As we approach an incredible milestone - 50 years of the Britannia Mine Museum - we want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you. Your support has been instrumental in preserving and bringing to life a crucial piece of our heritage. Because of donors like you, we’ve been able to preserve and transform this historic site, restoring our iconic Mill Building, make upgrades across the site, and even create BOOM!, an immersive show that shares the Mill’s incredible story in a whole new way. But our work doesn’t stop here. As we look toward the next 50 years, we’re more committed than ever to expanding the experiences and education we offer. On this Giving Tuesday, please consider contributing to help us keep history alive and to bring these new experiences to the community. Thank you for being part of our journey—past, present, and future. Together, we’re building a lasting legacy that will educate, inspire, and engage for generations to come. Your Impact: BOOM! Show In March 2017, the Federal Government announced that the Museum’s Mill Experience Project was to receive a federal $1.4 million contribution. This funding, in addition to our other generous donors was allocated towards the rehabilitation of the Mill with a multi-sensory show (later named BOOM!) that allows guests to experience what life in the Mill was like in 1920. Key project contracts were signed in 2017 and we advanced from creative concept through design development into script sign off. Production concluded in 2018-2019 and BOOM! was launched in June 2019. This project was part of the Museum's continued effort to share the history of our National Historic Site. In April 2022 BOOM! received the prestigious TEA Thea Award! This Giving Tuesday, December 3, 2024, you can make a lasting impact. For nearly 50 years, your donations have empowered the Museum to grow and evolve. As we approach our milestone 50th anniversary in May 2025, we invite you to help shape the next 50 years. Your support will keep history alive and enable us to create exciting new experiences for our visitors. Thank you for being a vital part of our story! Your Impact: The Britannia Project The 2010 Museum transformation was a result of an active board and generous donations from industry, government and individuals. A three-phase, $14.7 million revitalization project undertaken in 2010 which furthered the Museum's ability to educate about Canada's role as a leader in sustainable mining and resource development, environmental stewardship, and the history of Britannia Beach. The enhanced site now features exciting new venues for fun family entertainment and engagement about mining, local arts and culture events, restored heritage buildings, historical research and preservation, and education exhibits. What's That Thing? Two Stage Compressor Britannia used compressed air for many jobs. Some of those jobs, like powering drills, required higher air pressure than others. To achieve these high pressures efficiently, a two stage compressor was used. It works as its name suggests- the air goes through the compression twice. To meet the mine's compressed air needs, Britannia employed several compressors similar to this one. Due to their power hungry nature, the compressors were located in the powerhouse. Visit the Museum today, and see this piece of machinery that was once vital for the mining operations here. Netflix’s "Okja" is great movie that talks about industrialization and the harmful practices that are often observed. At the time of their closure in 1974, the Britannia Mines met the environmental standards of the day! However, 50 Million Liters of toxic water kept flowing into the Howe Sound every day and by the 1990s, the mine site had become one of the worst metal polluters to marine life in North America. In 2005, the EPCOR plant was introduced, helping us recover the ecosystem of Howe Sound. In Okja, we see Tilda Swinton in the historic Mill No. 3 building addressing the people. Stream Okja today on Netflix and get a different view of the museum! A trip to Vancouver was no easy feat! The Mt. Sheer townsite sat 4.5 km inland from Britannia Beach, nestled around 2000 feet high in the mountains. People would take a mine train from the townsite to the incline railway, from where they would travel standing up at a 30-degree incline and finally climb down 347 steps to reach the Beach. Here, in our featured #ThrowbackThursday reel, they embark on boat journey that will take them to Vancouver! In the footage we can see some iconic Vancouver places like The Lions Gate Bridge, The Vancouver skyline, The Vancouver Art Gallery, The Fairmont Hotel (The Hotel Vancouver #3), The Hotel Vancouver #2 (From 1916 to 1949, the Second Hotel Vancouver, stood on West Georgia Street between Howe and Granville). Lastly, we see The Lord Byng Secondary School before our travellers return back home to Mt. Sheer. Today a trip to Vancouver is just a 1-hour drive or transit. Keeping that in mind, why not take the short drive up the Sea to Sky highway and explore the copper rich history of Britannia?
