About us
The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) is the voice of Canada’s gaseous energy delivery industry, including natural gas, renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen. CGA membership includes energy distribution and transmission companies, equipment manufacturers, and suppliers of goods and services to the industry. CGA’s utility members are Canadian-owned and active in eight provinces and one territory. CGA members meet 38 per cent of Canada’s energy needs through a network of over 577,000 kilometres of underground infrastructure. The versatility and resiliency of this infrastructure allows it to deliver an ever-changing gas supply mix to over 7.4 million customer locations representing approximately two-thirds of Canadians. CGA members ensure Canadians get the affordable, reliable, clean gaseous energy they want and need. CGA is also working to constantly improve that gaseous energy offering, by driving forward innovation through the Natural Gas Innovation Fund (NGIF).

As we prepare for another extreme cold snap, we can't help but look back at last year’s event that tested our energy systems. Designed to handle peak demand, natural gas delivered unmatched stability and reliability. And it is ready to be there again – keeping Canadians safe and warm when it matters most. #ReliableEnergy #CanadianEnergy #NaturalGas #PolarVortex
First off, thank you in advance to all the utility workers! As Canadians and Americans finalize your weekend plans, make sure to check the weather forecast. This weekend is going to be a cold one! Meteorologists are tracking a polar vortex that will bring dangerously cold temperatures to many parts of Canada and the US lasting into next week. The incoming weather is a reminder of last year, when another system hit Western Canada, plummeting temperatures to below -40°C over a span of five days. In response, the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan broke peak energy consumption records on both the gas and electric systems. So, what will we see this time around in terms of energy use? There are some similarities to last year’s event. Bitter -40°C temperatures. Lasting about five days. However, unlike last year, this system is much larger, impacting most of Canada east of the Rockies and down to the midcontinental United States. Will we see more peak energy records get set? It will be close but we would not be surprised to the Canada and the United States set all time gas consumption records. We can be certain that the gas system will be there to respond exceptionally well. Gas storage levels heading into this winter were the highest they’ve been in the last decade at 30.5 billion cubic metres, about 73 days supply in a typical winter. The gas system manages peak energy demand like no other. It’s a system that experiences virtually no outages and has access to enormous amounts of energy storage.

Canadian Gas Association reposted this
Natural gas is always there when you need it. Take Jan. 8, for example—a cold winter day across Ontario. During peak usage, the Enbridge Gas system delivered an impressive amount of energy equivalent to that provided by 78,900 megawatts (MW) in generation capacity. Even more impressive, the Dawn Natural Gas Hub, one of North America's largest integrated natural gas storage facilities, withdrew and delivered the equivalent of 64,200 MW during that peak hour. To put this into perspective, the Independent Electricity System Operator, which manages the province’s power system in real-time, reported on Jan. 8 a peak Ontario electrical demand of 21,530 MW, with a peak generation capacity of 22,145 MW. And guess what? One-quarter of that capacity came from natural gas-fired generation. Here's another eye-opener: On the same day, the total energy Enbridge Gas delivered to Ontario was 4x the combined energy from nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, and biofuel sources. That's a massive contribution to our energy and economic needs. From this Jan. 8 snapshot, it's clear that Enbridge Gas delivers the energy that fuels the quality of life in Ontario. We're proud to be a big part of keeping you warm and powered up! #ONPoli #VitalEnergy #Ontario #WarmAndCozy
