A robust cost-benefit analysis is critical in the development of new federal regulations to determine their impact on Canadian manufacturers and whether that new regulations are evidence-based and proportionate in their impact on business. Unfortunately, the analysis by Environment and Climate Change Canada to support new menthane regulations and the proposed oil and gas emissions cap are flawed and incomplete, both failing to follow the basic rules of regulatory development set out by the federal government. CME is calling on these flawed analyses to be withdrawn and revised based on a realistic economic assessment through consultation with affected businesses. Please see our letter to federal ministers here: https://lnkd.in/g4JEYw6y

CME Ontario Past Board Chair James White of Wellmaster, recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal's Paul Vieira. The result? A concise yet comprehensive article reinforcing what our December tariff survey underscored: uncertainty is bad for manufacturing, and the looming threat of U.S. tariffs is already forcing Canadian manufacturers to delay investment, halt hiring, and rethink their business strategies. The Canadian response to these unjust tariffs must be strong and supportive. Manufacturers need concrete information to make decisions, and they need relief measures to weather this storm. CME is actively advocating for immediate government action if tariffs are put in place, including targeted financial support, to help manufacturers maintain operations and protect jobs. As this situation evolves, CME will continue to provide the latest information and resources to help manufacturers navigate these challenges. Join us on Wednesday for a members-only webinar that will tell you more about how we can weather this storm together: https://lnkd.in/gS7HDTcy

Emily Nichols, P.Eng. is an engineer who loved working in factories, but she didn’t always love being “one of the guys”. At CME’s 8th Annual #WomenInManufacturing Success Forum, Emily will challenge the way we think about language. She’ll share how words become habits, language evolves, and that we control them both. In this unforgettable keynote, she will shine a light on needlessly gendered language, sharing more inclusive alternatives, and will implore us to deliberately choose our own words. With humour and honesty, she’ll have you rethinking the words you use every day. Don't miss out - save your spot now: https://lnkd.in/ganH3Bx8. Get ready to transform your workplace, one conversation at a time.

Yesterday, President Trump signed a memorandum introducing a framework for reciprocal tariffs, potentially imposing yet another new set of trade barriers on Canada, following an assessment period that will conclude on April 1. This move threatens the deeply integrated supply chains that support our economy and could put thousands of Canadian jobs at risk. CME has been clear on this front: tariffs harm businesses, workers, and consumers on both sides of the border. A stable, predictable, and open trade relationship with the U.S. is essential for Canada’s manufacturing sector, and is to the benefit of both countries. CME will continue to advocate for fair and balanced trade policies. Manufacturers and stakeholders must stand together to protect Canadian jobs and investment. Stay up to date on how these unfair and unwarranted tariff proposals will impact your business, with our weekly CME insights webinars and our trade and tariff information hub here: https://lnkd.in/eEpHSbzE

Earlier this week on behalf of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, I spoke with Nathan Bawaan at the Toronto Star on Trump, the impact of steel and aluminum tariffs and opportunities for diversification ⬇️ “There is a force of gravity to the U.S. market that is very hard to overcome. So diversification is good, but it’s not going to fix our U.S. problem,” Greer said. “We will continue working with our partners in the U.S. with all levels of government and other stakeholders to also try to see what we can do to try to help preserve and restore what is, I would say, the most successful economic partnership in the world.” https://lnkd.in/eQW-Ty4Q

In the face of unprecedented threats, it's more important than ever for manufacturers to work together. For over 150 years, CME has been the united voice of Canada’s manufacturing sector, fighting to strengthen the industry, tackle regulatory barriers, and ensure manufacturers have the tools they need to succeed. But our voice is strongest when we stand together. Every new voice adds strength to our advocacy, ensuring we can push back against harmful policies, influence key decision-makers, and secure the future of Canadian manufacturing. The challenges ahead require unity - if you’re a manufacturer that isn’t already a member of CME, now is the time to get involved: https://lnkd.in/g66AcpF. When manufacturers come together, something powerful happens.
