The Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) is hosting ‘ConGen Global,’ focusing on advances in conservation genetics from 5-15 January 2025. CCF built and maintains the only fully capable conservation genetics laboratory at an in-situ conservation site in Africa. Since 1996, ConGen has been taught by preeminent genomics and conservation science experts. Delegates are drawn from some twenty countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Kenya, Namibia, Norway, Pakistan, South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine, U.K., the U.S. and more. Cheetah Conservation Fund Canada. Let’s keep the wild, wild! www.cheetah.org/canada/
About us
We are a registered charity in Canada, and an affiliate to Cheetah Conservation Fund headquartered in Namibia. We are run by a group of dedicated volunteer board members, and 98% of donations raised in Canada are used for programs in the field to save the cheetah in the wild. We also collaborate with Canadian organisations to provide support to the work in Namibia and Somaliland through grants, sponsorships or internship programs. We host events in Canada to raise awareness about the importance of saving the cheetah. We also have conducted classroom presentation. Did you know... - In 1900, there were 100,000 cheetahs across 44 countries, and today there are less than 7,500 - Cheetahs are now extinct in 20+ countries and are on the endangered species listing of the IUCN - Namibia is considered the "Cheetah capital of the world".

It's Impact Friday! Subsistence farming is the main source of survival for the majority of Namibia's rural population, which is largely poor. The majority of subsistence farming in Namibia takes place in the northern half of the country where human-wildlife conflict has been an issue. CCF knew that to create an environment where humans and wildlife can go exist, solutions were needed to reduce conflicts and improve livelihoods for these poor communities. CCF began by implementing a Model farm at the Centre as a demonstration that livestock and wildlife can coexist; introduced goats as an alternative livestock (not widespread at the time) for milk; then provided training to improve husbandry and farm productivity; and more recently, the production of goat dairy products like cheese, ice cream and fudge as a new stream of revenue targeting tourists and broader region. See article for more details. #ImpactFriday #Ecotourism #Livelihoods #WomenEmpowerment https://lnkd.in/eK2pXcGR

Arkadi’s held a number of senior executive positions in the forest products industry and he had the chance to see the world. He believed in the importance of conservation and giving animal a second chance. He had a special interest in the protection of the cheetah in the wild. https://bit.ly/3VFtDtb

The illegal wildlife trade is one of three main threats to wild cheetahs. In the Horn of Africa, the trade is pushing cheetah populations to a critical point. According to estimates, fewer than 500 adult and adolescent cheetahs remain in the wild in the region. However, approximately 200 to 300 cubs are removed from the wild every year, and smuggled out of the Horn of Africa to meet the demand for exotic pets. Much of the trade in live cheetahs occurs between the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, where cheetahs are illegally purchased as pets. In part, the trade is catalyzed by poverty in the source countries. Human-wildlife conflict plays a role too. Cheetahs are removed from the wild to prevent livestock predation, as a result of livestock losses mistakenly attributed to cheetahs. Now, climate change is exacerbating these threats. Droughts are a driver of human-wildlife conflict in the Horn of Africa, and climate change is making the region’s droughts even more severe. So, how is the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) helping to combat the illegal wildlife trade? CCF works with governments in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula to address the trade. In Somaliland, CCF supports wildlife seizure missions with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC), and provides care for rescued cheetahs at the Cheetah Rescue and Conservation Centre (CRCC) in Geed-Deeble. Research and education are a key part of CCF’s efforts too. In 2023, research published by CCF highlighting the impact of the illegal wildlife trade on the Northeast African cheetah, the subspecies found in the Horn of Africa, helped support its uplisting to ‘endangered’. That same year, conservation education programs were launched by CCF in Somaliland’s Awdal region, offering training to boost rural livelihoods by promoting coexistence with wildlife. Now, CCF is building an Education Centre at the Cheetah Rescue and Conservation Centre (CRCC). The Education Centre will be the first of its kind in the region - and will focus on protecting the Northeast African cheetah. Help us! Donate today to preserve the cheetah for future generation and help local people boost their livelihoods. www.cheetah.org/Canada or Bank e-transfer using Canada@cheetah.org. #SaveTheCheetah #IllegalWildlifeTrade #Africa #Conservation

It's Impact Friday! With the Cheetah Rescue and Conservation (CRCC) Centre in Somaliland, CCF is saving one keystone species (Critically Endangered), while providing refuge for many more! This selection of images was captured over the course of just one week, with a camera trap focused along the fence line at the CRCC. During the week, the cameos include desert warthogs, dik dik, Hamadryas baboons, and a porcupine. There were predators too, including a white-tailed mongoose, a caracal and a handful of spotted hyenas. The CRCC is situated in an 1,800 acre forest reserve, located about an hour from Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa. Geographically, Somaliland is located within the Horn of Africa Biodiversity Hotspot, one of 36 biodiversity hotspots found worldwide. However, over the last century, wildlife populations in the region have declined - and the status of many species remains unknown. The camera trap images captured provide insights into the region's wildlife (and ecology). By recording their observations, staff at the CRCC are also helping to document the area’s biodiversity - and gathering information that can potentially help guide future conservation and education efforts. #WildlifeConservation #Biodiversity
