Today is budget day at the Alberta legislature! This is the view from Crestview Strategy Edmonton HQ yesterday as the team gets ready to react and ensure you can know the big stories to the nitty gritty. And you can know my colleague Tom Vernon will keep us CP compliant. It will be the first budget released in Canada trying to predict revenues during a time of trade uncertainty. I’ll be keeping my eye out for more than belt tightening, but buying a new pair of skinny jeans, while the government keeps its promises on health, education, and affordability.

🚨 You can’t change someone’s mind by just throwing facts at them. In today’s polarized world, persuasion doesn’t work the way we think it does. I’ve spent my career trying to influence public opinion. And things are changing: people aren’t listening. Why? Because motivated reasoning and tribalism have made people more resistant to persuasion than ever. 👉 People don’t process facts—they defend their identities. When confronted with evidence that contradicts their beliefs, they don’t reconsider. They double down. 👉 Echo chambers have become the default. Social media didn’t just split people into ideological silos. It made them the norm. 👉 “Naïve Realism” is a killer. Everyone assumes their worldview is rational—and that those who disagree are misinformed, biased, or worse. 👉 The backfire effect is real. Correcting misinformation can make people more convinced of the falsehood. Takeaways: ✅ Forget “fact dumps.” If your strategy is “let’s educate people,” you’ve already lost. ✅ Understand identity-protective cognition. If changing their mind means betraying their tribe, they’ll never do it. ✅ Don’t argue—ask. Instead of debating, ask open-ended questions that encourage reflection. Tomorrow, I’ll break down why many digital campaigns are dead on arrival. What do you think? Is is possible to win on facts alone?👇

  • With Ontario's provincial election fast approaching, how will undecided voters looking to oust Doug Ford cast their vote? Crestview Strategy Partner Dan Moulton is quoted by Mike Crawley for CBC News: "Liberals and New Democrats have a far more bitter rivalry than Liberals and Conservatives because we're competing for the same voter pool." The differences between the Liberals and the NDP are becoming more clear as Thursday's election draws closer, and as each party tries to pitch itself as the only real alternative to Ford.
