Today, on #WorldSightDay, we want to highlight the clinicians and scientists who are at the forefront of innovation, conducting cutting-edge #research and developing new #treatments for #blindness and #vision loss. #DYK: More than 5.5 million Canadians live with #eye diseases, such as #glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (#AMD) and #cataracts, and this number is expected to double over the next 20 years. The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) at University Health Network's Donald K. Johnson Eye Institute is a dedicated space to translate basic #science discoveries into #clinical applications, which will help support the development of innovative treatments to preserve and restore vision. Dr. Shaun Singer, Ophthalmologist in the Comprehensive Ophthalmology Unit at University Health Network’s Donald K. Johnson Eye Institute, will be retiring on November 28, 2024, after 28 years of service. During his time at DKJEI, what Dr. Singer enjoys the most is the ability to make a huge positive impact on the lives of many people, as well as, teaching and training the next generation of ophthalmologists. Dr. Singer’s impact extends beyond UHN. In 2006, he helped to start the Kensington Eye Institute Kensington Health, where he served as the Medical Director. Over the years, the Institute has become the largest academic eye surgery facility in Canada. It has also helped reduce the cataract waitlist in Toronto and provides a world-class cataract surgical training facility. Read in our newsletter >> https://lnkd.in/gEWn9GCR

Montreal mom regains her sight thanks to a cutting-edge surgery only offered at University Health Network Donald K. Johnson Eye Institute. It is the only hospital in Canada that performs ocular stem cell transplants from deceased donors. In such cases, these stem cells would usually be harvested from the patient’s healthy eye, grown in a lab and transferred into the diseased eye. Another great example of the impact of recruiting top talent to care for our community and rewrite the medical books.
