This time of year, there’s a lot of talk about charitable donations and philanthropy…’tis the season of giving, after all. And it’s no doubt that many nonprofit organizations will see a marked increase in donations—a lot of it motivated by the desire to get that year-end tax receipt. While it is a benefit or a lure to encourage charitable giving, it’s not the main motivator. “There’s a narrative that philanthropists are motivated by self-interest and are an elitist group, when in fact, we’re all philanthropists. If you give $20 to something, you’re a philanthropist,” explains Tina Thomas CPA, CEO of the Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF). “We aren’t motivated by the tax receipts. I am very proud to have been recognized at the Al Rashid Education Foundation for the work that Riad Assaf, MBA and I did to create Canada's first Shariah-compliant endowment fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation
