About us
Environmental Defence inspires change by connecting people with environmental issues that affect their daily lives in their homes, workplaces & neighbourhoods. We do this by working on: TOXICS: We educate consumers about the chemicals & heavy metals in consumer products and cosmetics. We offer free practical tools, like our shoppers’ guide. And we connect customers with companies to let them know it’s time to get these toxics out. ENERGY: We are leading the charge in helping Canada shift to a green economy. We seek to end wasteful fossil fuel subsidies, invest in energy efficiency & smart conservation ideas, and speed up the transition to clean and safe renewable energy. All of which are already growing our economy & creating new jobs. LAND AND WATER Environmental Defence works to protect one by protecting the other. By preserving green spaces, we protect the natural filters that keep pollutants from our rivers and lakes. It also helps keep local farmland for agricultural use. That’s why we’re so proud that the world’s biggest Greenbelt wraps around Toronto, & why we educate about the dangers that sprawl presents. Connect with us on other social media! Transport Canada’s EV incentive program will run out of funding before March 31, 2025. The gov’t missed a chance to top it up in the Fall Economic Statement, leaving Canadians without support for zero-emission vehicles. Climate policies like this must not fall victim to political chaos. https://bit.ly/4aewNu7

Late last year, Alberta introduced more restrictions on renewable energy development #abpoli Does this provide certainty to renewable energy producers of where they can locate wind & solar projects or, is it really a hostile move aimed to shelter an oil & gas industry worried about a clean energy future? Find out in our blog ⤵️

This is our 3rd most read blog of 2024: Some things haven’t changed. All year, Premier Ford and his provincial government have been finding new ways to bulldoze through Ontario’s farms, forests and habitats on their mission to fuel destructive sprawl instead of fixing the housing crisis. Denser, sustainable housing is the answer—not unchecked development. From earlier this year 👇

The countdown of our top blogs of 2024 continues. Here’s our 4th most read blog: Murray Edwards is 2024's Fossil Fuel Fanatic. As 2024 closes, Murray Edwards continues to profit from pollution, pushing false solutions like carbon capture while ignoring the destruction caused by his company’s emissions and spills. From wildlife killed in toxic tailings ponds to lobbying for pro-oil policies, Edwards remains a key player in blocking real climate action. It’s time for real climate leadership — not more corporate greed Read more ⤵️
