Why does ERAC hold annual Regional Training and Assessments? ERAC conducts a Regional Training and Assessment (Regional) of each ERAC liquefied petroleum gas and flammable liquids response team on an annual basis. These yearly assessments provide an opportunity for all ERAC responders to hone their skills and get updates on any new industry trends and developments, while they are assessed and approved to respond to incidents on behalf of ERAC’s Plan members. All regionals include classroom training sessions and tabletop exercises (day one) and conclude with a full “hands on live product” exercise involving the entire response team (day two). The end result is a nation-wide network of experienced, competent emergency response teams that can respond on behalf of ERAC’s Plan members, any time, any place. #EmergencyPreparedness #Training #DangerousGoods #EmergencyResponse #LPG #FlammableLiquids

Rob Barrow is the owner of Eco-Pro Services Inc., a member of the Emergency Response Assistance Canada (ERAC) Board of Directors, and for the past five years, an ERAC Remedial Measures Advisor (RMA). As an ERAC RMA, Rob responds to liquified petroleum gas (LPG) incidents, accidents and releases and ensures that proper processes are followed in the care and transfer of dangerous goods, and that people, property and environment are protected. This year, Rob has responded to two Alberta-related Tier 2 incidents on behalf of ERAC Plan members, including a serious multi-vehicle accident in March that resulted in two fatalities, one punctured and burning Butane tank and a second damaged and leaking tank. Working in cooperation with the RCMP, local fire department and Keyera LPG response team, the scene was secured, flames extinguished, and residue product safely removed from the damaged container tanks (via flaring and Nitrogen injection). With all safety concerns addressed, tow truck operators were able to safely clear the accident scene and the highway was reopened. Incidents like these call for experienced, competent responders to safely assess and address the situation. ERAC thanks Rob for his over 25-year commitment to the propane industry, our organization and public safety. #EmergencyPreparedness #Training #EmergencyResponse

Incidents involving dangerous goods, including flammable gases and liquids, rarely happen. When they do, ERAC’s plan members know they can simply call our 24/7/365 emergency response call centre to initiate the most effective and efficient regulatory compliant response from our nation-wide network of trained, assessed and approved emergency response teams. #emergencypreparedness #Training #emergencyresponse #DangerousGoods

Two realities generally exist when a serious incident occurs. Often, there is a discrepancy between what is happening within an organization and what the public perceives is happening. As an organization, it’s up to you to close the gap between perception and reality. Providing factual information quickly and consistently will help reduce this critical space. Involving Communications in your tabletops, drills and exercises, can help identify some of these potential gaps/issues and greatly improve your organization’s overall preparedness for a potential incident. #EmergencyPreparedness

Did you know that to maintain compliance under the Environmental Emergency (E2) regulations, you must conduct an annual tabletop exercise or emergency response activity, as well as a full-scale exercise within five years of implementing your E2 plan? Annual exercises or response activities are to be conducted within one year of the facility becoming subject to the regulations and must test different emergency scenarios each year. Full-scale exercises are typically complex and resource-intensive and are staged in a realistic field environment requiring the deployment of personnel, resources and equipment. ERAC can plan, facilitate and evaluate your small and full-scale exercises to ensure regulatory compliance, and most importantly, the safety of your employees and the public. Each year, ERAC holds several liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Level 1 Operations firefighting training courses for first responders across Canada. Course participants review commonly encountered LPG emergencies, work through strategies and tactics to safely manage the situation and complete their training with hands-on “live burn” exercises. Instructors are ERAC full-time technical advisors with NFPA 1041 instructor credentials. Many of our participants are on-call firefighters in their community.
