A national not-for-profit dedicated to making cities flourish. HQ: Evergreen Brick Works
About us
Evergreen is a national non-profit working to transform public spaces in our cities for the health of people and our planet. Cities and communities that are better connected, inclusive to all and sustainable at their core. Cities that are bursting with life. Since 1991, Evergreen has been working to steward our planet, educate the next generation and create green, public spaces that benefit our cities and communities. Working with other city builders and community leaders to develop innovative ideas and catalyze change by testing solutions and help scale projects that benefit both people and our planet. Through our award-winning suite of programs, we have actively engaged Canadians in creating and sustaining healthy urban environments in our schools, our public spaces, in housing and transit systems, and communities themselves. Greener, vibrant cities start here – at a site, in a neighbourhood, on the ground – where spaces become great places, and have a real and lasting impact, creating a better world for all. Previously a historic brick factory, Evergreen Brick Works was transformed by Evergreen in 2010 to be an example and showcase of how that comes to life and is made possible.A demonstration hub where the world can experience sustainable practices that enable vibrant cities of the future. It connects people, business, academia and government to turn what-if’s into how-to’s that will shape our country for the better.

For a large North American city, Toronto is surprisingly rich in biodiversity. And its natural assets are getting noticed internationally. “There’s a number of new tools and technological ways of quantifying and qualifying the biodiversity that we have that surrounds us here. We've been able to utilize ecological benefit studies to get data to understand the ecological benefits that Toronto's nature provides to its citizens and then inherently to its ecology and the wild,” says Kim Statham, Urban Forestry Director with the City of Toronto. “Toronto's urban forest has a structural value of $7 billion. Even if we had $7 billion, we can't spend it to replace what we have — that very rich diverse living ecosystem which is Toronto's urban forest,” says Statham. “But that gives a pretty good indication of its importance and the critical role that it's playing to the livability and quality of life of Torontonians, visitors and others who come through the city.” Listen to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gaWCMxBg

Small buildings or structures for public use can be climate-friendly, smart and beautiful 😍. Creative design elements and materials make the Forest Pavilion in a Winnipeg park (pictured) an excellent example of flood-resistant design. The Forest Pavilion also leverages innovative technologies like the Internet of Things to turn off the lights when no one’s using the multi-purpose rooms or the bathroom!⚡ Read more on the five case studies featured in our latest research brief, Showcasing Solutions: Innovations in Public Spaces: https://lnkd.in/g4QHBTZV - Les petits bâtiments ou structures destinés à un usage public peuvent être respectueux du climat, intelligents et beaux 😍.

Don’t let life pass you by while you’re glued to a screen. Look up, step outside and take in the beauty of the world around you. A whole, vibrant, breathtaking world exists beyond our tiny screens! ✨ Let’s celebrate and support public spaces where we can come together in real life—places like Evergreen Brick Works, where we build connections that matter most. Our community has shared that the Farmers Market has become a cherished weekly tradition, their children have formed lifelong friendships at our camps, and they’ve celebrated countless special moments, from weddings to other milestones, here at the Brick Works. Put the phone down, grab a friend or family member, and make a moment worth remembering today. Meet our November #StaffSpotlight, Michelle Zeppieri! As the Assistant Manager at the Evergreen Garden Market, Michelle brings her deep-rooted knowledge of all things green to every customer experience. She plays a key role in curating the selection of goods at the store, from gardening essentials to local artisan handcrafts and fresh holiday essentials. Let’s get to know more about Michelle! 🌲 Share some fun facts about yourself! I worked on an organic farm for 3 years where I learned how to grow over 60 different types of vegetables from seed. Shout out to Joyfully Organic Farm for teaching me everything I know! I love learning about and working with soil – it's an incredibly precious ecosystem that is teaming with life! Did you know that just one tablespoon of soil contains 50 billion microbes?! Because of the role microorganisms play in our lives, soil is one of the most important ecosystems on Earth, helping to regulate the climate, reduce droughts and floods, filter water, and grow nutritious food! 🌲 What’s your favourite part about working at the Evergreen Garden Market? I love seeing the garden center come alive in the spring with people strolling through the rows of plants, picking out just the right ones for their gardens. Each person has their own unique style, and it's so fun to see the way they mix and match plants, textures and colors. Often, customers bring in rough sketches of their ideas for native plantings or vegetable gardens and helping them bring those visions to life is incredibly rewarding! 🌲 What’s your favourite public space and why? Honestly, Evergreen Brick Works! My first experience there was working with Joyfully Organic Farm at the Saturday Farmers Market, and I instantly fell in love with the vibrant atmosphere. There’s something magical about how the market brings together farmers, makers and the local community all in one place. In time for the holidays, Michelle has made sure the Evergreen Garden Market is fully stocked with eco-friendly Christmas trees, wreaths, garlands, door charms and mantlepieces! Drop by the store at the Brick Works and come say hello! #EvergreenBrickWorks #Toronto

Some of the best moments are made possible by great public places. 💜 2024 has shown us just how vital public spaces are for our health and communities. They are where acquaintances become friends; where families play together; and where we learn and experience new cultures. However, with more time spent on devices, we're missing out on meaningful in-person connections, contributing to an epidemic of loneliness, linked to issues like attention deficits, sleep deprivation, anxiety and depression. Public spaces provide a solution, offering accessible spots to connect in person and create lasting memories. Together we can continue to build places where children can laugh and play out loud, and where communities can come together to skate, walk, and cycle, enjoy local food and crafts, and connect with one another. Donate today to help keep our public spaces thriving for generations to come. Let's put our phones down, connect with loved ones, and enjoy the great outdoors this holiday season! Thank you for your support! Donate today: https://bit.ly/3AIXtFO
