Ending Poverty. One community at a time.
About us
FH Canada, part of the global Food for the Hungry (FH) network, is a registered non-governmental organization dedicated to sustainable development and emergency response among the world's most vulnerable. Often found far outside city limits, FH Canada works where there is little or no current development programming. Their integrated holistic strategy provides attention to education, health, agriculture, leadership development, environmental sustainability and gender equality. FH Canada walks alongside community and family leaders – a significant distinctive in global development. Instead of asking communities what they need, FH Canada asks them what they already have and helps them to develop their own visions of sustainability, providing notable dignity and respect for local leadership.

Swapna's community had a problem—they couldn't get enough water. Forty families shared just four wells, two of which dried up for six months of the year. This meant women had to wait hours for their turn to collect water and families couldn't bathe or wash clothes regularly. Worst of all, families often fell ill from waterborne diseases. But, thanks to generous Canadians who gave Gift Guide items like Clean Water and Water Wells, FH Bangladesh worked with the community to prioritize clean water access. Swapna, a mother and leader in the community, donated her own land for the new waterpoint site! "Now I and all my neighbours drink safe and pure water,” Swapna tells us. Learn how clean water transformed Swapna’s community. Read her story ➡️ https://ow.ly/ZJso50Us82V #CleanWater #GiftGuide #WaterAccess #AccessToCleanWater

A great report from Food for the Hungry Rwanda! Chickens and pigs increase agricultural productivity and provide families with a source of income. Breeding livestock helps fight malnutrition and, in turn, boosts family health. Check out the impact of these Gift Guide items from FH Rwanda ⬇️
To combat malnutrition and stunting in children, as well as to increase agricultural productivity and access to breeding stock, Food for the Hungry, operating in Ngororero District, Bwira Sector, provided chickens and pigs to vulnerable households. A total of 1,015 chickens were distributed to 524 families, and 134 pigs were given to 134 families. This activity took place in Bungwe Cell, where residents from various cells like Gashubi and others within the sector gathered. The shareholders were selected with the assistance of local government authorities. The recipients expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Food for the Hungry, affirming that the livestock will significantly help address malnutrition caused by limited resources in their households. People were also advised not to consume or sell the livestock, as doing so would undermine the purpose of the initiative and hinder its intended benefits. #FHinterventions #Godcalling #communitytransformation #resilienceandflourishingthroughsystemstransformation #weservewithhumility #wepursuebeautygoodnessandtruth

Education didn't always feel within grasp for Samira. Like many girls in her community, she faced pervasive poverty which put her at risk of child marriage. When Samira engaged in training with FH Bangladesh, she learned about the adverse effects and impacts of early marriage and the importance of education. Inspired, she shared what she learned with her friends, relatives and neighbours. Today, Samira has a profound understanding of the importance of education and, in spite of numerous obstacles, she has completed secondary school and now attends university. This is a first for Samira’s family! “I have a strong commitment to combating child marriage. I aspire to contribute towards creating a community free from this issue,” she tells us. “Every girl should complete their education.” Education opens the door to new opportunities and gives talented girls like Samira the chance to meet their full potential. This Giving Tuesday, we're aiming to raise $35,000 to empower women and girls in our partner communities. Do you know what the word, Advent, means? It comes from two Latin words which, combined, mean "to come." At Advent, we remember God coming to us in Jesus—we look back to Jesus' first coming and forward to his second. And as we experience the in-between, we rest in Jesus our Immanuel—God with Us. This Advent Sunday, take a moment to reflect with Samaresh Nayak, FH Bangladesh Country Director. Read the reflection ➡️ https://ow.ly/WwQJ50UicGC #Advent #AdventSunday

“We thought it was all over but FH came in time!” Lucie tells us. “We received a goat and are now feeling happier than before.” Lucie worked hard but struggled to make ends meet. A goat provided a new way to make an income and equipped her to provide for her family. Along with a goat and chickens, Lucie and her son Mugisha learned how to plant and care for a kitchen garden, the importance of #handwashing, and to care for livestock. It's World Toilet Day—but what makes today so important? Children need a safe and clean place “to go”, both at home and at school. That's why when FH partners with a community, we work with local leaders to create plans to improve WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene). Constructing WASH facilities, like toilets and latrines, for families helps end #opendefecation and improves community health. All the while, families, teachers, and children are trained on life-saving hygiene practices, like handwashing. This World Toilet Day, learn more about the importance of clean toilets ➡️ https://ow.ly/xZ0h50Uag4F #CleanToilet #WorldToiletDay #WASH #Sanitation #Hygiene
