Industrial Hemp Production: Collateral Damage in the Cannabis “Civil War” In this insightful Forbes article, Cannabis ‘Civil War’ Continues as the US Cannabis Council Rejects Hemp Applicants to Its Board, attorney Bob Hoban exposes a growing rift in the cannabis industry. He highlights a pressing issue for industrial hemp farmers: the emerging industrial hemp industry is increasingly overshadowed and outmaneuvered by the marijuana and cannabinoid hemp industries. When the 2014 Farm Bill passed, it promised a sustainable, versatile future for industrial hemp, poised to revitalize American agriculture. Entrepreneurs and farmers rallied to reestablish hemp’s historic role in the economy, focusing on fiber and seed production. But by 2015, the high-profit allure of CBD reshaped the industry, and hemp producers shifted almost exclusively to cannabinoid production, leaving fiber and seed behind. In just four years, this pivot led to a brutal fallout: CBD overproduction flooded the market, driving down prices and leaving many hemp farmers struggling to stay afloat. Now, the blurred lines between marijuana, cannabinoid hemp, and industrial hemp have drawn hemp farmers into a regulatory quagmire. Industrial hemp, intended as a large-scale crop for American farmers, is worlds apart from the horticulture-focused models of marijuana and cannabinoid hemp. Yet industrial hemp farmers find themselves entangled in this ongoing regulatory crossfire, forced to navigate convoluted rules that seem designed to stymie this nascent industry. This “Civil War” between the marijuana and cannabinoid hemp industries is fueled by regulatory imbalances at the federal and state levels. Cannabinoid hemp producers operate with lower expenses and far fewer restrictions, enabling them to underprice their marijuana-producing counterparts. To make matters worse, this battle is unfolding in an industry that was already fragmented. Meanwhile, industrial hemp farmers are in a precarious position, struggling with regulations that fail to address their specific concerns. Industrial hemp deserves a legislative approach tailored to its unique needs, separate from the ongoing cannabis conflicts that currently hinder its growth. If lawmakers made a concerted effort to streamline industrial hemp regulation, entrepreneurs and farmers could finally get to work reintroducing this versatile, historic crop across America. We shouldn’t overlook the vital role industrial hemp could play for America’s 1.8 million small farmers, who are seeking sustainable income for their families and hoping to build a viable future for generations to come. It’s time to disentangle industrial hemp from the broader cannabis debates and return to the original vision of the 2014 Farm Bill—a vision for a crop that bolsters American farmers, invigorates rural economies, promotes regenerative agriculture, and provides sustainable alternatives for a wide range of industries. #IndustrialHemp #HempFarmers #Cannabis
