Really fascinating article about food waste vs. plastic waste 👇
Cucumbers! They're delicious, nutritious, and...covered in plastic? If you've ever wondered what's going on with all this plastic packaging around our fruits and veggies, this blog is for you. *Spoiler* the answer may be more interesting, and complicated, than you think! In this first installment of our No Bad Questions series, our curious and cucumber-loving colleague, Jessie Sitnick, unpacks the tensions and trade-offs between plastic waste and food waste. Many thanks to Daniel Duguay of Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA), Denise Philippe of National Zero Waste Council (NZWC), Geneviève Dionne of Éco Entreprises Québec, and Cher Mereweather of Canada Plastics Pact for bringing their perspectives and expertise to this story. Well said, Hajira 👏
BREAKING: our #HungerCount2024 report found there were 2 million visits to food banks across Canada in March 2024. It took food banks about 25 years to reach 1 million visits a month and only 5 for it to double that. The system is showing signs of buckling under unrelenting pressure as close to 30% of food banks in Canada report running out of food before demand was met. For more key findings from the report, please visit https://lnkd.in/gcvtqtN7. Georgia Main Food Group Limited is leading the charge in reducing food waste—and they’re doing it through action, not just donations. In partnership with the Immigrant Link (ILCS), Georgia Main staff recently spent a day volunteering to pack and distribute nutritious food hampers for families in need. This experience brought them face-to-face with the people and communities they’ve been supporting through their food recovery program. Since partnering with FoodMesh in 2020, Georgia Main has diverted 2.4 million kg of unsold food—equivalent to more than 4 million meals—to charitable organizations. Read all about it in our latest post on the Quirky Pear blog: https://lnkd.in/gg7QKks6 This is the kind of leadership we need to fight hunger and reduce environmental impact. By not only donating unsold food but also stepping onto the frontlines, Georgia Main is helping to build a stronger, more sustainable future for everyone. A huge thank you to ILCS for their tireless work, and to the Georgia Main team for going above and beyond! 💡 Is your business ready to take action against food waste and make a difference in your community?
