  • 🚫 It’s International "I Hate Coriander" Day! 🌿 Love it or loathe it, coriander (or cilantro) is one of the most divisive herbs out there! But did you know your genes might be to blame? 🧬 A variation in the OR6A2 gene affects how people perceive coriander’s flavour—some get a fresh, citrusy taste, while others say it reminds them of soap 🧼. This gene influences how we detect aldehydes, compounds found in both coriander and, well… soap! So, if you're a coriander hater, don’t worry—it’s just your genetics talking! Do you love or hate coriander? Let us know in the comments! #IHateCorianderDay #GeneticsOfTaste

  • New genomics research is helping BC tackle H5N1 bird flu. Since 2022, BC has culled over 8.5 million poultry due to a devastating H5N1 outbreak, impacting farmers and driving up food prices. The virus’s recent crossover to cattle and humans underscores the need for greater vigilance. We’re funding two key projects at BC Centre for Disease Control in partnership with the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the Ministry of Health, the Provincial Health Officer and The University of British Columbia. These projects will leverage genomics to: ◆ Track and analyze the virus – Monitor mutations to detect changes that could increase human risk ◆ Improve early detection – Develop antibody tests and implement wastewater surveillance ◆ Study transmission – Investigate how wind may spread the virus ◆ Enhance data sharing – Create platforms to streamline research and response efforts. This collaborative effort is critical to protecting BC’s communities. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gwiwPdZg #Genomics #Innovation #BirdFlu #H5N1

  • 🚀 Happy Pluto Day! 🪐 On this day in 1930, Pluto was discovered—changing our understanding of the solar system forever! Once considered the ninth planet, Pluto was reclassified as a "dwarf planet" in 2006, sparking endless debate (Pluto lovers, we see you! 😉). But did you know that genomics plays a role in space exploration too? Scientists study how space travel affects human genes, paving the way for future missions to distant worlds. 🌌 So, whether you still count Pluto as a planet or not, today is a great day to celebrate discovery, curiosity and the ever-evolving nature of science! #PlutoDay #SpaceScience #GenomicsAndBeyond
