❄️🌈 Ever heard of a snow rainbow? Also known as a snowbow, this beautiful phenomenon happens when light is refracted through snowflakes in the air. Unlike a traditional rainbow, which forms when light passes through water droplets, a snowbow’s colours are often muted or faint due to the complex shape of snowflakes, which are less effective at refraction. Next time it’s snowing, keep an eye out for this rare, ethereal sight! ❄️🌨️ #Snowbow #SnowRainbow

🌲 Protecting BC’s Forests with Cutting-Edge Genomic Tools: The BIOSAFE Project 🌲 Invasive pests and diseases pose a serious threat to BC's forests, causing significant ecological damage and economic losses. Forests, both natural and urban, are essential to the province’s environmental health, biodiversity and economy. Enter the BIOSAFE project—an initiative leveraging genomics to safeguard our forests. By utilizing advanced DNA analysis, scientists can now swiftly and accurately identify invasive species such as the Asian long-horned beetle, Dutch elm disease, sudden oak death and spongy moth. Early detection is critical, as it allows for rapid response to prevent these harmful organisms from spreading and establishing in BC. One of the most exciting innovations from the BIOSAFE project is the development of a portable, field-ready DNA testing device. This tool equips forest health professionals with the ability to monitor and manage invasive species on-site, enabling more effective and timely interventions. #BCForests #InvasiveSpecies #Biodiversity
