  • The market has posted record-high returns lately, despite some experts predicting a downturn earlier in the year. But ups and downs are inevitable—the key is not reacting emotionally. These are some of the measures we take to shore up our portfolios against downturns—and help Genus clients remove emotion from investing decisions: 👉We take a long-term view. At the beginning of each client partnership, we put a long-term plan in place, with goals and set timelines. And then we stick to the plan. 👉We communicate that success is all about “time in the market” and not “timing the market.” Successful investors tend to be the ones that stay in, riding out the ups and downs. 💬As Genus Portfolio Manager Grant Conroy says: “I've worked with some very intelligent people over the years and watched them do incredibly well at timing the markets, only to be undone by timing the following year.” 🤦♂️ 👉We trust the data. Every month, we run 40 macro models, 40 stock models with around 250 inputs. We adjust our asset mix, regions and industries based on what this data is telling us—avoiding reliance on media sources or even ‘gut instincts’ (which can often be wrong). #GenusCapital #Investing #ImpactInvesting

  • Most investors have heard of bonds, but not all understand the ins and outs—and in our experience, even fewer know about the existence of “green,” sustainable or impact bonds. Here’s a rundown of the essentials, and what we offer: 🔎A bond is typically a lower-risk loan that you make to a company or government in exchange for fixed interest paid out at regular intervals. 👉A bond fund, like our Genus Global Impact Bond Fund, places your investment into a range of bonds at once, and you receive monthly payments that reflect an average of all. ✅The bonds in our fund contribute to projects with proven environmental and social impacts—in areas like renewable energy, green buildings and public transportation—across the U.S. and Canada; benchmarked against the US Aggregate Bond Index for risk and return. 💡Bottom line? Bonds represent another way to invest, balance your portfolio and fund positive impacts with your savings. • Here’s another great book pick from our team. 📘🔍Our Jill Bester came across Michelle Obama’s latest book by chance, when looking for a vacation read in a grocery store during a Campbell River getaway. And it turned out to be exactly what she needed. “In her last book, she blew my socks off with her carte blanche honesty—she is such a leader,” says Jill. “In this book, she talks with humility about her own personal strife, around the lagging impacts of Covid on our connection, and lack thereof.” Obama also dives deeper into her own story, continuing where she left off in her bestselling memoir “Becoming,” while also sharing some strategies she has used to “pick herself up and dust herself off,” adds Jill. If you’re seeking inspiration for staying engaged in the face of shared challenges, this is a great read. Thanks, Jill! #GenusBookPick #GenusCapital #ImpactInvesting

  • Given the current state of the housing market, it might be hard to believe that any kind of real estate investing could be part of the solution. But we think “impact real estate” holds major promise. Many companies out there are focused on alleviating the housing crisis. We offer exposure to many of the most promising through our High Impact Funds. The examples covered here include the Nordelec Building by Allied Properties REIT and affordable-housing partner New Market Funds.  🙌 All allow values-driven investors to participate in returns from real estate projects that generate transformative, positive social and environmental outcomes. You can read more about impact real estate and investing opportunities in our latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/egM5aZ5p #GenusCapital #RealEstateInvesting #ImpactRealEstate

  • You may think you’re investing ethically, but here’s a piece of concerning news: greenwashing is common in the sustainable and responsible investing sphere. That is: the practice of giving false or misleading statements about how sustainable a fund is. We really dislike seeing this, because it breeds a lack of trust in responsible investing generally. For example, one 2023 Deloitte survey found that 57% of Canadian consumers no longer trust firms’ environmental claims! 🙈 All of this is why Genus offers a comprehensive system of investing screens—which thoroughly filter out undesirable activities and companies from our responsible and high-impact investing funds. Our screens are aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and carefully measured and verified against third-party data—with the results made publicly available. Our latest blog post is all about how investing in “impact real estate” may help: https://bit.ly/498lnr0 Not only has housing become unaffordable, but the housing market also contributes to the climate emergency: Canada’s residential sector contributes 12.6% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions Read the article ⬆️ to learn about some of the key real estate holdings in our impact funds. • Recently we received some exciting news: Genus has officially been recertified as a B Corp—with a new higher score of 126.2 (up from 121.2). 🎉🎉 To say we’re proud is an understatement! Maintaining our B Corp certification is an important part of how we publicly demonstrate our commitment to making a positive impact in the world. If you’re wondering what “B Corp” is all about, it’s a designation given to companies that have been third-party-verified for their commitment to balancing purpose and profits. The certification and recertification processes are managed by an independent non-profit, B Lab, which ranks each applicant in five areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers. It’s a ✨very✨ intensive process we go through every three years to retain the designation. We’ve taken our score from 88.8 in 2017 to our new, current high of 126.2. You can read more about about our BCorp journey and recertification in this recent article: 👉 https://bit.ly/41ecH0l #GenusCapital #BCorp #ImpactInvesting Source: BCorporation.net

  • Over the past few weeks, we’ve been sharing our team’s sustainable holiday shopping picks. This one officially wraps up the series: Toronto’s Saponetti, from Genus Associate Client Relationship Manager Darryl Brown. 🌲🎁 Saponetti originated as a one-stop shop for personal care and home products—from cleaning products to toothpaste—that reduce single-use-plastic waste. Today, this certified B Corp supports an avid community of customers who aspire to live a zero-waste lifestyle, with a local brick-and-mortar station for refilling refundable glass jars with household products, as well as an online shop full of sustainable goods. 🌱 As Darryl says: “I trust them. I know that so much thought has been put into their entire supply chain from how their products are produced and how they arrive at your home using zero-emissions delivery providers.” As a bonus, everything smells great, too! He recommends the Saponetti Essentials Orange Zest Hand & Body Soap—or check out their zero-waste gift boxes. Happy holidays and happy gifting! 💚❤️ Find all our team’s picks in our official 2024 B Corp Gift Guide: https://bit.ly/3Z17mIq #BCorpGiftGuide #GenusCapital #SustainableShopping #ImpactInvesting
