Today is #NationalConstructionDay! GEO Morphix provides inspection services during the construction phase for many of our designs including watercourse realignments and wetlands, erosion protection for channels and shorelines, and stormwater outlet facilities. By providing on-site construction inspections, our staff support the overall project team to verify proper design implementation and permit compliance on a range of creek and shoreline restoration projects.

Last week, GEO team members attended Yukon's Annual Geoscience Forum and Trade Show. Over the four-day event, team members listened to experts speak about last year's field season and learned about successes, challenges, and opportunities in the mining industry. Team members also heard from Yukon First Nations Chiefs and citizens on Indigenous partnerships and involvement as a key to achieving sustainability and success in the Yukon mining industry. To add to an already great week, they also got to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Yukon. What an excellent trip for river enthusiasts!

Last week, we attended the Municipal Engineers Association Conference in Ottawa, ON. This year's conference theme couldn't have been more fitting for us - River Resilience! We enjoyed meeting and interacting with everyone who stopped by our booth and who attended the social events. Tye Rusnak wrapped the conference up with a presentation: A comparative study of UAV, LiDAR, and RTK-derived geospatial survey information in a partially wooded stream corridor. Great job Tye! Thank you for having us, MEA. We look forward to seeing you next year!

Today is World Fisheries Day! At GEO Morphix, we complete fish community sampling to monitor the effectiveness of naturalized channel corridors that contain enhanced fish habitat. In the first year of post-construction monitoring, we establish a control site within the constructed channel and a reference site upstream in the existing channel to provide baseline data for future fish community sampling events. These future results offer insight into the success of the channel design in providing suitable habitat in both the control site and the reference site. Our team has sampled fish species, including Johnny Darter, Creek Chub, White Sucker, and Blacknose Dace in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, consistently demonstrating that our constructed designs are successful post-development.

GEO Morphix is heading to Erosion Solutions 2024: First Annual Atlantic Canada Erosion Control Conference. Join us on October 24 when Paul Villard and Michael Lawson will share insights into river and channel restoration. Paul will explore the many environmental benefits provided by designed rivers and channels with a special focus on carbon retention. Michael will showcase how promoting resiliency in natural channel design contributes to more effective erosion protection strategies.

Join Paul Villard as he walks along the recently constructed Omagh Tributary corridor realignment in Milton, Ontario, Canada. This corridor was realigned as part of a Mattamy Homes residential subdivision development in collaboration with David Schaeffer Engineering Limited, and NAK Design Strategies, with contractor services provided by Terrain Group and DeKay Construction. In this video, Paul speaks about the science behind realigning corridors and how we build habitats for wildlife long before the homes for people are built. For the full video visit our YouTube channel! Keep an eye on our accounts for more videos from GEO Morphix team members in the future!
