On this day, we take time to reflect and acknowledge the lasting impact of residential schools on Indigenous Peoples. Our Firm is closing offices for a day, and we encourage colleagues to use this time to learn and reflect about the history of the residential school system, as well as the land we live and work on. To help support Indigenous communities, the Grant Thornton Foundation donated to Indspire's Building Brighter Futures program this year, supporting scholarships for Indigenous youth pursuing post-secondary education. We also participated in a season of Bears’ Lair Television, the competition series that amplifies Indigenous entrepreneurs who are creating meaningful change through business in their communities and beyond. Today and every day, we honour Indigenous communities as powerful contributors making a significant impact on Canada's business landscape and culture.
About us
Celebrating our legacy. Helping our colleagues, clients, and communities create theirs. Toronto, ON (October 1, 2024)—Grant Thornton LLP Canada is now Doane Grant Thornton LLP—one of Canada’s leading assurance, tax, and business advisory Firms. We made this change to our name because of the importance we place on our presence in communities across Canada, combined with the power of being a member of Grant Thornton International’s global network of resources. By reintroducing Doane—the Firm’s founding partner—to our name, we honour our Canadian roots and the values that have driven our success for 85-years, while paving a path to make even stronger contributions to the businesses we support and the communities we live and work in.

Our roots run deep in Canada. Our founding partner, Harvey Doane started our Firm in Halifax more than 85 years ago. He had a passion for business, a knack for numbers, and a love for people. His kindness and professionalism laid the foundation for who we are today. Harvey Doane built the business with a core set of values that still resonate today: encouraging initiative, treating people fairly, and building relationships with our clients and colleagues. We've been helping Canadian businesses grow, transition, and thrive for over 85 years. It’s how we’re building our legacy as we help you create yours. Keep an eye out as we share an exciting update on October 1! #CelebratingOurLegacy #CreateYourLegacy

Congrats to Membertou First Nation on another historic acquisition! This transaction represents significant promise and possibilities for First Nations communities—both now and for future generations. It’s been a privilege for our M&A team—led by Troy MacDonald, and Angie Brown, CPA, CA, CIA—to support you.
We’re proud to announce that Newdock - St. John's Dockyard Ltd. a staple in St. John’s Harbour for the past 140 years is being acquired by an Indigenous-led partnership between Membertou First Nation, Qalipu First Nation and Horizon Naval Engineering. Horizon Naval Engineering is a new chapter in the Horizon Maritime group’s journey, focused on ship repair and related marine services. No one wants to—or should—pay more tax than they need to. Opening a business in an Indigenous community doesn’t mean it’s tax exempt. While the location of your business may be an important factor, determining the tax treatment of the income earned must consider other connecting factors. Learn more about this and other misconceptions surrounding Indigenous taxation in our latest article: https://ow.ly/iZb150TwfkE #IndigenousTax #IndigenousBusiness #IndigenousEntrepreneurs

Insightful conversations and collaborative guests were abundant at the recent Insolvency Insider Canada Distressed Real Estate Conference hosted at our national office in Toronto. From navigating a turbulent market to recent real estate insolvencies and timing your investment, the lively conversation from the three panels (which included insights from our own Jonathan Krieger and Dan Wootton) were informative and engaging. We’re grateful for the opportunity to engage with industry-leading professionals and share dynamic, trending content to better serve our clients.

We just wrapped up our Annual Partners Meeting in the stunning city of Kelowna, bringing together all of our Partners from across our Assurance, Tax, and Advisory practices. This year’s theme, Living Our Legacy, was a powerful reminder of the privilege and responsibility our Partners at the Firm hold. It’s about more than the work we do—it’s about the lasting impact we leave behind, for each other, our clients, and the communities we serve. We took time to reflect on the journey that has brought us all here. Together, we’re not just building a business—we’re building a legacy. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for our Firm as we continue to grow and lead with purpose.
