Tomorrow is National Housing Day. Please see the media release below that we issued this morning regarding the work we have done in 2024 and the work we are striving to do in 2025. For Immediate Release November 21, 2024 Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce recognizes National Housing Day Owen Sound, ON – November 22, 2024 is National Housing Day. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) which delivers the Government of Canada’s housing programs, describes the day as “a day dedicated to raising awareness about housing and homelessness”. Unstable and insecure housing can be a major driver of stress for families. Once they have stable housing that truly belongs to them, it allows them to put their focus on the other things that matter to them. One new homeowner mentioned the “peace of mind, just knowing (the house is) ours,” when asked how their life changed when they became a Habitat homeowner. The homeowner later added “things run really smoothly now.” Home ownership rates have dropped in both Bruce and Grey Counties since 2006, with housing becoming further and further out of reach for many families. According to Habitat for Humanity’s 2024 Affordable Housing Survey, the vast majority of Canadians (84 per cent) say buying a home feels like a luxury and the goal of owning a home in Canada has become out of reach (81 per cent). “The housing challenge requires a collective effort,” said Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce Executive Director Greg Fryer. “We are extremely grateful to our donors, volunteers, partners and staff for their generosity as we strive to grow our work to empower even more hard-working families to thrive and have a safe, accessible, and decent home to call their own.” In 2024, Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce fully completed two homes in May and will have two more completed before the end of 2024 on the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. The organization also supported the Band by renovating the former library building into three apartments. This work was done under the Model of Hope partnership, an agreement between Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce and Saugeen Ojibway Nation (Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation) which has built 35 homes and supported many more critical repairs since its inception in 2016. Additionally, Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce also successfully purchased back four previously built Habitat homes in Hanover (3) and Wiarton (1). Three of the homes have been fully renovated in collaboration with the new Habitat homeowners and family selection for the fourth home is set to open in early 2025. 1/2

Habitat for Humanity Canada released its third annual Affordable Housing Survey, revealing Canadians’ attitudes towards the homeownership gap and the nation’s deepening housing crisis. These results show the importance of providing an affordable pathway to homeownership. This year’s survey results highlight the broader implications of Canada’s housing crisis, including its impact on mental health and well-being, and a growing economic and generational divide. The impacts are particularly evident for young Canadians, whose major life decisions, including family planning, where to live, and where to pursue a career are all impacted. Visit www.habitat.ca to read the results of Habitat for Humanity Canada's third annual Affordable Housing Survey.

That’s why we’re asking students from grades 4 to 6 to tell us their #MeaningofHome for the chance to win a grant towards a Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce build! For every submission, $10 will be donated on that student’s behalf to their local Habitat. To enter: meaningofhome.ca

On Friday, Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce had the honour and privilege to host nearly 30 students from Brampton Centennial Secondary School, Peel District School Board and Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin along with our #ModelOfHope partners, Chippewas Of Nawash Unceded First Nation (CNUFN). The #students participated in #ActiveReconciliation as they witnessed the #TinyHomes, that they had a part in #Building being set in place, in their forever home in Neyaashiinigmiing. These homes will serve as transitional housing in the community for years to come. Thank you, Councilor Norma Tobey, with CNUFN, who welcomed the students to the community and expressed her gratitude on behalf of Band and Council. Councilor Norma shared details and information about CNUFN and Neyaashiinigmiing during the event. She encouraged them to return to the community and to exhibit pride with what they've accomplished here. Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce is incredibly grateful for our partnership with Environment Office of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation and everyone who has made this pilot possible. The Tiny Home project has been an astounding success thanks to all of your skill, dedication and efforts. We #ThankYou all sincerely.
